How does praising God change challenges?
How can praising God impact our perspective on challenging situations?

Setting the Scene: When Faith Faced Fear

The Moabites, Ammonites, and Meunites joined forces against Judah. King Jehoshaphat felt the weight of certain defeat—until the nation chose worship over worry.

“Then the Levites from the sons of Kohath and Korah rose to praise the LORD, the God of Israel, shouting in a very loud voice.” (2 Chronicles 20:19)

What Jehoshaphat’s Singers Teach Us

• Praise erupted before the first sword was drawn.

• Worshipers led the army, singing, “Give thanks to the LORD, for His loving devotion endures forever.” (v. 21)

• God answered with confusion in the enemy camp; Judah never lifted a weapon.

Five Ways Praise Re-frames Our Troubles

1. Shifts our focus

– Instead of staring at the obstacle, we “magnify the LORD” (Psalm 34:3).

2. Reminds us who God is

– His “loving devotion endures forever” (v. 21). Circumstances change; His character doesn’t.

3. Recalls past victories

– “I will remember the works of the LORD” (Psalm 77:11). Yesterday’s deliverances fuel today’s faith.

4. Invites God’s presence

– “You are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel” (Psalm 22:3). When He is enthroned, fear is dethroned.

5. Releases supernatural peace

– “Be anxious for nothing… the peace of God… will guard your hearts” (Philippians 4:6-7). Praise opens that door.

Echoes Through Scripture

Acts 16:25-26 — Paul and Silas sing in prison; chains fall, doors open.

Habakkuk 3:17-19 — Though crops fail, the prophet sings, “The LORD is my strength.”

Psalm 42:11 — “Why, my soul, are you downcast?… I will yet praise Him.”

Isaiah 61:3 — “A garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.”

Every account shows praise altering perspective before circumstances shift—and often triggering the shift itself.

Practicing It Today

• Start your day with a song or psalm, not the news feed.

• When bad reports arrive, answer immediately with verbal praise.

• Keep a journal titled “Reasons to Praise,” adding fresh entries daily.

• Gather with other believers; corporate praise amplifies faith just as it did in Judah’s army.

Summing It Up

Praise is not denial of hardship; it is the deliberate choice to view hardship through the lens of God’s unchanging greatness. Like Judah’s singers, we can meet any battle by declaring who He is, watching perspective change—and often the outcome as well.
