How is a lasting ordinance observed today?
In what ways can we observe "a lasting ordinance" in our current faith practices?

Setting the Text

“This day will be a memorial for you… a lasting ordinance for the generations to come” (Exodus 12:14). When Israel left Egypt, God established Passover as a perpetual reminder of His saving power. Though Christ has fulfilled the Passover (1 Corinthians 5:7), the principle of a “lasting ordinance” still shapes how believers live and worship today.

What a “Lasting Ordinance” Means

• God-given practice anchored in historical salvation

• Continual remembrance that shapes identity

• Community-wide, spanning generations

• Tangible sign pointing forward to ultimate fulfillment in Christ (Hebrews 10:1)

Enduring Principles We Carry Forward

• Redemption is central: God rescues and we remember

• Memorial leads to worship: gratitude fuels obedience

• Family discipleship: truth is taught at home (Deuteronomy 6:6-9)

• Holiness: removing “leaven” of sin remains vital (1 Corinthians 5:8)

How We Observe the Ordinance Today

1. The Lord’s Supper

– Regularly break the bread and share the cup, proclaiming the Lord’s death until He comes (1 Corinthians 11:26).

– Approach the table reverently, examining hearts and celebrating freedom purchased by the true Passover Lamb.

2. Storytelling & Teaching

– Retell the Exodus—and its fulfillment in the cross—to children and new believers.

– Use family meals, small groups, and church gatherings to rehearse God’s rescue.

3. Rhythms of Remembrance

– Mark the church calendar (Good Friday, Resurrection Sunday) as touchpoints for corporate reflection.

– Incorporate songs, readings, and testimonies that highlight deliverance.

4. Living Unleavened Lives

– Routinely repent of hidden sin, pursuing purity.

– Practice church discipline and mutual accountability so the “whole loaf” stays undefiled.

5. Acts of Generous Celebration

– Like Israel sharing the lamb with neighbors (Exodus 12:4), open homes in hospitality, especially to the needy.

– Give sacrificially, letting celebration of freedom overflow in practical love (Galatians 5:13).

Passing It On

• Keep the ordinance visible: Communion table front-and-center, not an afterthought.

• Keep it understandable: Explain symbolism every time so newcomers grasp the gospel.

• Keep it communal: Share together, refusing individualistic spirituality.

• Keep it hopeful: Each observance points to the marriage supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:9).

Living the Truth Daily

Remembering God’s mighty deliverance presses us to walk in holiness, teach the next generation, and celebrate with grateful hearts—an unbroken chain of obedience that makes the “lasting ordinance” vibrantly present here and now.
