In what ways can we strive for greatness in God's kingdom today? The Surprise of Kingdom Greatness “Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet even the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” (Matthew 11:11) John the Baptist: A Living Illustration • Single-minded focus—John’s entire life pointed to Jesus (John 3:30). • Fearless truth-telling—he called both crowds and kings to repentance (Luke 3:18-20). • Humble posture—he rejoiced to fade into the background once Christ appeared (John 1:27). These traits define true greatness, yet Jesus says the most obscure believer now holds an even higher position because of direct union with the risen Christ. Even the Least Is Greater—Why? • Full revelation—New-covenant believers know the crucified and resurrected Savior John only anticipated (Hebrews 1:1-2). • Indwelling Spirit—the Holy Spirit permanently resides in every Christian, empowering obedience and witness (John 14:17; Acts 1:8). • Adoption status—we are called children of God, heirs with Christ (Romans 8:15-17). Greatness, then, is not pedigree or platform but intimacy with Jesus and Spirit-enabled service. Practical Ways to Pursue Kingdom Greatness Today Seek first the Kingdom • Prioritize God’s reign over personal advancement (Matthew 6:33). • Order time, money, and ambitions around Christ’s mission. Cultivate humble dependence • Stay “poor in spirit,” acknowledging daily need (Matthew 5:3). • Confess sin quickly; keep a soft heart toward correction. Serve from the bottom up • Choose the towel over the throne (Matthew 20:26-28). • Look for unnoticed tasks and unseen people; do them good (Galatians 5:13). Point others to Jesus, not self • Use gifts to spotlight the Savior, echoing John’s “He must increase; I must decrease” (John 3:30). • Celebrate others’ successes without envy (Philippians 2:3-4). Stand for truth with grace • Speak biblical convictions lovingly yet without compromise (Ephesians 4:15). • Accept the cost of faithfulness, remembering John’s imprisonment. Live Spirit-filled, not self-powered • Begin each day asking the Spirit to bear His fruit (Galatians 5:22-23). • Rely on His strength for bold witness and holy living (Acts 1:8). Endure with joyful hope • Greatness grows through perseverance under pressure (James 1:12). • Fix eyes on the promise that “our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory” (2 Corinthians 4:17). Measure Greatness by Eternity’s Yardstick The King defines greatness as humble, Spirit-enabled service that exalts Christ and blesses others. By embracing that path, any believer—however unknown on earth—can hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant,” the highest accolade in God’s kingdom. |
