How to aid those unfairly criticized?
In what ways can we support those feeling unjustly criticized, like Job?

Job’s Cry and Our Calling

“Ten times now you have reproached me; you are not ashamed to wrong me.” (Job 19:3)

Job’s protest reveals the sting of repeated, unjust criticism. His friends’ words—intended as counsel—deepened his wounds. Scripture’s record is literal and accurate, and it invites us to learn how to respond differently.

Listen First, Speak Later

James 1:19—“Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger.”

• Give eye contact, nod, allow silence.

• Resist the urge to “fix” the situation with rapid advice; Job’s friends spoke too soon (Job 2:13 vs. Job 4 ff).

Protect Their Reputation

Proverbs 18:21—“Death and life are in the power of the tongue.”

• Gently redirect conversations that rehearse false accusations.

• Affirm publicly what you know to be true about the person’s character.

Offer Words that Build, Not Break

Ephesians 4:29—“Let no unwholesome word proceed out of your mouth, but only what is helpful for building up the one in need…”

• Replace “You must have done something wrong” with “I know God sees your integrity.”

• Speak Scriptural promises: Psalm 34:18; Isaiah 42:3.

Share the Burden Tangibly

Galatians 6:2—“Carry one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

• Practical help: meals, childcare, errands, legal counsel if needed.

• Presence matters; Job’s friends helped most while they simply sat with him (Job 2:13).

Remind Them of God’s Nearness

Psalm 139:11-12—darkness is not dark to Him.

Romans 8:38-39—nothing can separate from His love.

• Encourage personal lament and honest prayer; God welcomed Job’s raw questions (Job 23:3-5).

Stand Between Them and Further Harm

Proverbs 31:8—“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves…”

• If gossip or slander continues, lovingly confront it (Matthew 18:15).

• Offer to accompany them to meetings where accusations may arise.

Encourage Steadfast Hope

1 Thessalonians 5:11—“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up…”

• Recall Job 19:25—“I know that my Redeemer lives.” Help them cling to the living Redeemer who will vindicate the righteous.

• Share testimonies of past deliverance (2 Corinthians 1:10).

Guard Your Own Heart While Helping

Galatians 6:1—watch yourself so you also won’t be tempted (to pride, harshness, or cynicism).

• Pray privately for humility and wisdom.

• Measure counsel against the clear, literal Word of God.

By listening well, speaking life, acting tangibly, and pointing back to God’s unchanging truth, we become the kind of friends Job longed for—and the Scriptures call us to be.
