If I say,
This phrase introduces a hypothetical thought or internal dialogue, reflecting the psalmist's introspection. It suggests a moment of doubt or fear, common in human experience, where one might question God's presence or ability to see them in times of trouble. This introspective approach is seen throughout the Psalms, where the psalmist often begins with a personal reflection or concern.

“Surely the darkness will hide me,
Darkness in biblical literature often symbolizes chaos, evil, or the unknown. The psalmist's concern that darkness could hide them reflects a fear of being separated from God's presence. This echoes the human condition post-Fall, where sin creates a perceived barrier between humanity and God. However, the Bible consistently teaches that God is omnipresent and omniscient, as seen in Job 34:22, which states that there is no darkness where evildoers can hide from God.

and the light become night around me”—
Light is frequently used in Scripture to represent God's presence, truth, and guidance. The fear that light could turn into night suggests a deep anxiety about losing divine guidance and protection. This imagery is reminiscent of the Exodus narrative, where God provided a pillar of fire by night to guide the Israelites (Exodus 13:21). The transformation of light into night can also symbolize a spiritual or moral decline, yet the psalmist ultimately affirms that even in such darkness, God remains present and sovereign, as seen in John 1:5, where the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Persons / Places / Events

Teaching Points
God's Omnipresence
No matter where we are or what we face, God is always present. We cannot hide from Him, even in our darkest moments.

Facing Fear with Faith
When we feel overwhelmed by darkness or fear, we can trust that God's light is with us, guiding and protecting us.

Transparency with God
We should be open and honest with God about our struggles and fears, knowing that He sees and understands everything.

The Illusion of Hiding
Attempting to hide from God is futile. Instead, we should seek His presence and guidance in every situation.

Light as Guidance
God's light provides direction and clarity in our lives. We should seek His wisdom and truth to navigate through life's challenges.(11) If I say . . .--Rather,

I say only let darkness crush me,

And light become night around me.

Commentators have mostly been frightened by the metaphor in the first line, though it has been preserved both by the LXX. and Vulg., and can only be avoided either by forcing the meaning of the verb from what it bears in Genesis 3:15, Job 9:17, or altering the text. Yet the Latins could speak even in prose of a region "oppressed by darkness" (Sen. Ep. 82); and when night was used as figurative of death, nocte premi was a common poetical figure. Indeed, the word rendered darkness here is actually, in Psalm 88:6, used of death, and if we understood this figure here we might render the word trample, illustrating by Horace

"Jam te premet nox fabulaeque Manes."

Such a view would suit the thought to which the poet immediately passes--to God the darkness of death and the nothingness before birth are alike. On the other hand, as the main thought is that nowhere is there escape from God's sight in height, or depth, or distance so to exhaust the possibilities we seem to need, darkness. . . .

Verses 11, 12. - If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. If I think to escape thee by plunging into darkness, and say to myself, "Surely the darkness shall screen me, and night take the place of light about me," so that I cannot be seen, even then my object is not accomplished; even the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day. Thy essential light penetrates every dark place, and makes the deepest gloom as radiant as the brightest sunshine. The darkness and the light are both alike to thee; literally, as the darkness, so the light; but the paraphrase of the Authorized Version gives the true sense.
