How can we apply the courage shown in 1 Chronicles 11:14 today? Setting the Scene “ But they took their stand in the middle of the field, defended it, and struck the Philistines down. And the LORD brought about a great victory.” (1 Chronicles 11:14) Seeing the Courage on Display • Shammah and the mighty men refused to yield even a patch of ground. • Their confidence rested in the certainty that the LORD would fight for them. • The victory is credited directly to God, yet it came through their fearless obedience. Why Their Stand Matters Now • God still honors those who stand firmly where He places them. • The same Lord who delivered Israel remains unchanging (Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8). • Courage is not optional for believers; it is commanded (Joshua 1:9; 1 Corinthians 16:13). Cultivating Courage Today 1. Anchor yourself in God’s Word – “Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.” (Ephesians 6:10) 2. Pray for boldness, then act on it – “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7) 3. Remember previous victories – Rehearse how the Lord has carried you through past trials; this builds faith for present battles. 4. Stand shoulder to shoulder with fellow believers – Shammah was part of a company. Isolation breeds fear; fellowship fuels courage (Hebrews 10:24-25). 5. Focus on God’s glory, not personal safety – Their field became a stage for divine victory; so can your workplace, classroom, or neighborhood. Everyday Fields That Need Defending • Truth in conversations where Scripture is questioned • Moral purity in a culture bending the standards of holiness • The value of human life from conception to natural death • Biblical marriage and family in public discourse • Integrity at work when shortcuts promise quick gain • Compassionate witness to the gospel, even when it risks ridicule Strengthening Our Resolve Through the Word • Psalm 27:1 – “The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?” • Isaiah 41:10 – “Do not fear, for I am with you… I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” • Romans 8:31 – “If God is for us, who can be against us?” • 1 Peter 3:14 – “Even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed.” Encouragement to Move Forward Just as a single field in Judah mattered to God, every sphere of life entrusted to you matters. Stand your ground. Defend it in faith. The same Lord who brought a great victory then is ready to bring one now through believers who will not retreat. |
