How to apply "I'm not just a child" today?
How can we apply "do not say, 'I am only a child'" today?

Stepping Beyond Excuses

Jeremiah 1:7: “But the LORD said to me: ‘Do not say, “I am only a child.” For to everyone I send you, you must go, and whatever I command you, you must speak.’”

The Original Context

• God calls young Jeremiah to be His prophet during turbulent days in Judah.

• Jeremiah protests, focused on his youth and inexperience.

• The LORD dismisses the objection and emphasizes obedience, authority, and His enabling presence.

Why We Still Feel Small

• Age or stage of life: students, young adults, or new believers often feel inadequate.

• Perceived lack of credentials: “I don’t have the training.”

• Fear of rejection: “Who will listen to me?”

• Awareness of personal limitations: speech, personality, past failures.

Practical Applications

Depend on God’s sending, not personal stature

• The call determines the capability. If God sends, He equips (Hebrews 13:20-21).

• Replace self-labeling with God-labeling: instead of “I’m only…,” declare “God is with me.”

Speak what He commands

• Share the gospel and biblical truth without editing for personal comfort (Acts 4:19-20).

• Use Scripture memorization so God’s words, not insecurities, fill the mouth (Psalm 119:11).

Go where He directs

• Serve in the local church even when tasks seem beyond you—teaching children, leading study, outreach.

• Obey promptings to encourage, confront, or comfort others with Scripture (2 Timothy 4:2).

Anchor identity in God’s presence

• “I am with you” (Jeremiah 1:8) is echoed in Matthew 28:20. The promise overrides every “only.”

• Pray Psalm 27:1 when fear rises: “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?”

Promises That Fuel Courage

Exodus 4:12: “Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.”

1 Timothy 4:12: “Let no one despise your youth, but set an example for the believers…”

2 Corinthians 3:5-6: “Not that we are competent in ourselves… but our competence comes from God.”

Encouragement for Different Seasons

Youth: Lead peers in Bible study; model purity and faithfulness.

Mid-life: Don’t say, “I’m only a layperson.” Use career and family spheres for witness.

Senior years: Refuse, “I’m only retired.” Pour wisdom into younger generations (Psalm 92:14).

Closing Thoughts

Every “I am only” shrinks before the great “I AM.” When He sends, speak. When He commands, obey. When He promises His presence, step forward—regardless of age, status, or perceived ability.

Connect Jeremiah 1:7 with Moses' reluctance in Exodus 4:10-12. What similarities exist?
