How to avoid evil before the LORD?
What steps can we take to avoid "evil in the sight of the LORD"?

Setting the Scene: Israel’s Repeated Stumble

“Then the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD and served the Baals.” (Judges 2:11)

Every time this refrain appears, it signals a predictable downward spiral: forget God, embrace idols, reap oppression. By tracing what led Israel into evil, we can map steps that keep us from repeating the pattern.

Step 1: Guard the Heart With Scripture

• Keep God’s Word front-and-center. “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.” (Psalm 119:11)

• Memorize and meditate daily. Scripture acts as an internal alarm when temptation knocks.

• Use practical reminders—verses on phone lock screens, sticky notes, family recitation times.

Step 2: Cultivate Daily Remembrance of God’s Works

• Israel’s trouble started when “another generation arose who did not know the LORD or the works He had done for Israel.” (Judges 2:10)

• Keep a journal of answered prayers and providential moments.

• Retell testimonies at meals and gatherings so God’s faithfulness remains fresh.

Step 3: Maintain Biblical Worship and Fellowship

• Abandoning corporate worship opened the door to Baal. Stay rooted in a Bible-preaching church (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Sing doctrinally rich songs that exalt God rather than self.

• Engage in the Lord’s Supper soberly; it re-centers us on Christ’s sacrifice (1 Corinthians 11:26).

Step 4: Pursue Obedient Repentance Immediately

• Israel delayed turning back until oppression grew unbearable (Judges 3:15).

• Confess quickly when the Spirit convicts (1 John 1:9).

• Replace sin with righteous action; repentance is more than apology.

Step 5: Embrace Spirit-Led Accountability

• God raised judges to call sin out publicly. Likewise, invite mature believers to ask hard questions (Galatians 6:1-2).

• Meet regularly in transparent, Scripture-centered accountability.

• Receive correction as God’s grace, not intrusion.

Step 6: Train the Next Generation

• Failure to teach children led Israel to idols (Deuteronomy 6:6-7).

• Integrate Scripture into everyday life—car rides, chores, bedtime.

• Model repentance; children learn how to respond to sin by watching us.

Step 7: Fix Eyes on the Righteous Judge and Savior

• Human judges offered temporary relief; Jesus provides permanent victory over evil (Hebrews 9:24-28).

• Preach the gospel to yourself daily: Christ’s cross breaks sin’s power, His Spirit empowers obedience (Romans 8:1-4).

• Anticipate His return—living with eternity in view sharpens present holiness (2 Peter 3:11-14).

By weaving these steps into daily rhythms, we stay alert, anchored, and joyfully free from doing “evil in the sight of the LORD.”
