What steps can we take to ensure we are not spiritually blind? Seeing the Urgency in John 7:34 “ You will look for Me, but you will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.” Jesus warns that religious activity without genuine faith leaves people unable to recognize or reach Him. Spiritual blindness is real, deadly, and avoidable. Why Spiritual Blindness Happens • Hard hearts that resist conviction (Matthew 13:15) • Pride that presumes we already see clearly (John 9:40–41) • The enemy’s blinding deception (2 Corinthians 4:4) • Neglect of God’s Word and Spirit (Revelation 3:17–18) Steps to Keep Our Eyes Open 1. Pursue Christ, not mere information • “Seek first the kingdom of God” (Matthew 6:33). • Daily set your mind on things above (Colossians 3:1–2). 2. Stay humble and teachable • Ask with the psalmist, “Open my eyes to see wondrous things in Your law.” (Psalm 119:18) • Welcome correction; “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6) 3. Obey the light you already have • “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.” (James 1:22) • Obedience clears the fog; disobedience darkens it (John 14:21). 4. Walk in continual repentance • Keep turning from sin as soon as the Spirit exposes it (1 John 1:9). • Repentance restores clear sight (Revelation 3:19). 5. Abide in Scripture • Let the Word dwell richly in you (Colossians 3:16). • Scripture renews the mind and reveals hidden blind spots (Hebrews 4:12). 6. Depend on the Holy Spirit • Pray for “a spirit of wisdom and revelation” so “the eyes of your heart may be enlightened.” (Ephesians 1:17–18) • The Spirit guides into all truth (John 16:13). 7. Engage in honest fellowship • “Encourage one another daily… so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.” (Hebrews 3:13) • Faithful friends point out what we can’t see on our own (Proverbs 27:6). 8. Cultivate godly virtues • Add goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly affection, and love (2 Peter 1:5–9). • “Whoever lacks these qualities is nearsighted” (v. 9). 9. Serve sacrificially • Loving others keeps vision outward and Christ-focused (Mark 10:45; 1 John 3:17–18). 10. Watch and pray • Jesus’ call in Gethsemane (Matthew 26:41) is our safeguard against dullness. Supporting Passages That Light the Way • John 9:39–41 — seeing versus claiming to see • Isaiah 6:9–10 — prophetic pattern of blindness • Revelation 3:17–19 — lukewarm Laodicea urged to buy “salve to anoint your eyes” • 2 Corinthians 3:16 — turning to the Lord removes the veil • John 15:4–5 — abiding in the Vine keeps spiritual sight alive Living It Out Daily Morning: Open Scripture, ask the Spirit to illumine, obey what He shows. Throughout the day: Practice quick repentance, humble listening, acts of service. Evening: Review the day with the Lord, thank Him for light given and received. Consistent habits like these keep eyes clear, hearts soft, and feet ready to follow wherever Jesus leads—never stuck outside looking for Him, but walking closely with Him now and forever. |
