How to be open to God's message?
In what ways can we ensure we are receptive to God's message?

Setting the Scene

Luke 10 records Jesus sending out seventy-two disciples to preach, heal, and announce that “the kingdom of God has come near.” When a town welcomed the messengers, it enjoyed blessing; when it rejected them, it faced judgment.

Luke 10:12

“I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.”

The verse is a sober reminder that ignoring God’s message carries real consequences. The flip side is equally true: welcoming His message brings life. How, then, can we keep our hearts receptive?

Why Receptivity Matters

• God speaks through His Word, His Spirit, and His people.

• A soft heart keeps us in step with His will and protects us from judgment (Hebrews 3:7-15).

• Obedience brings blessing (James 1:25).

Habits That Cultivate an Open Heart

1. Humble Yourself Daily

• Confess sin quickly (1 John 1:9).

• Remember God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6).

2. Immerse Yourself in Scripture

• Read, meditate, and memorize (Psalm 119:11).

• Approach the Bible expecting God to speak (Psalm 119:18).

3. Listen Before You Speak

• “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak” (James 1:19).

• Silent moments create space for the Spirit’s promptings (1 Kings 19:12).

4. Obey Promptly

• “Be doers of the word and not hearers only” (James 1:22).

• Immediate obedience keeps the heart from hardening (Luke 6:46-49).

5. Stay in Fellowship

• God often speaks through other believers (Proverbs 27:17).

• Corporate worship and accountability guard against drift (Hebrews 10:24-25).

6. Guard Against Distractions

• Limit voices that dull spiritual sensitivity (Mark 4:18-19).

• Choose inputs that stir affection for Christ (Philippians 4:8).

7. Pray for Illumination

• Ask the Spirit to guide you into truth (John 16:13).

• Echo Samuel’s posture: “Speak, for Your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:10).

Scripture Snapshots to Reinforce the Lesson

• Parable of the Sower—four soils, one fruitful (Luke 8:11-15).

• Mary sitting at Jesus’ feet—prioritizing His words over busyness (Luke 10:38-42).

• Bereans—eager reception and daily examination of Scripture (Acts 17:11).

Daily Checklist for a Receptive Heart

□ Start the morning with repentance and praise.

□ Read a portion of Scripture, asking, “What does this reveal about God? What does He want me to do?”

□ Pause during the day to listen—no phone, no noise.

□ Act on the last clear instruction God gave.

□ End the day thanking Him for every nudge, correction, and encouragement.
