The Parable of the Sower Explained
17But they themselves have no root, and they remain for only a season. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 18Others are like the seeds sown among the thorns. They hear the word, 19but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth, and the desire for other things come in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.…

He who loves money is never satisfied by money, and he who loves wealth is never satisfied by income. Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. / But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. / For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Still others
This phrase introduces a new category of hearers in Jesus' parable of the sower. The Greek word used here, "ἄλλοι" (alloi), indicates a distinction from the previous groups mentioned. It suggests that within the human response to God's word, there are diverse reactions. This diversity reflects the varied conditions of human hearts and the different ways people receive and respond to the Gospel message.

are like
The phrase "are like" is translated from the Greek "εἰσίν" (eisin), which is a form of the verb "to be." This comparison is a key teaching method used by Jesus, employing parables to convey spiritual truths through everyday experiences. By using this analogy, Jesus helps His listeners understand complex spiritual realities through familiar agricultural imagery.

the seeds
The "seeds" in this parable represent the word of God. In the original Greek, "σπέρματα" (spermata) is used, which is the plural form of "seed." This imagery is powerful, as seeds are small yet have the potential to grow into something much larger and fruitful. The seed's potential is fully realized only when it falls on good soil, symbolizing a receptive heart.

sown
The term "sown" comes from the Greek "σπειρόμενα" (speiromena), which is a participle form of the verb "to sow." This action implies intentionality and effort in spreading the word of God. The sower's role is crucial, as it involves disseminating the message of the kingdom, trusting that it will find fertile ground in which to grow.

among the thorns
The phrase "among the thorns" is translated from the Greek "εἰς τοὺς ἀκάνθας" (eis tous akanthas). Thorns in the biblical context often symbolize obstacles, difficulties, or distractions that can choke spiritual growth. Historically, thorns were a common problem for farmers in the ancient Near East, representing the challenges that can prevent the seed from maturing. In a spiritual sense, these thorns are the cares of the world, the deceitfulness of wealth, and the desires for other things, which can suffocate the word of God in a person's life.

Verse 18. - And these are they which are sown among thorns. According to the best authorities, the words are (καὶ ἄλλοι εἰσιν), and others are they, etc. This marks a considerable difference between the two classes. This is the third condition of soft; and it is so much better than the former, inasmuch as the thorns present less obstacles to the growth of the seed than the rocky ground does. This similitude indicates the heart of that hearer who is beset with the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches and the lusts of other things.
