How to be remembered positively?
How can we ensure our lives are remembered positively by others?

The Sad Epitaph of Jehoram

2 Chronicles 21:20 records, “Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. And he died to no one's regret and was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.” One brief sentence captures an entire wasted life: “he died to no one's regret.” No one mourned him; no one celebrated him; no one cared. Scripture gives this sober snapshot so we can choose a different path.

Why Was Jehoram Forgotten?

A quick review of 2 Chronicles 21 shows why his reign ended in dishonor:

• He “walked in the ways of the kings of Israel” (v. 6), embracing idolatry instead of devotion to the LORD.

• He murdered his own brothers (v. 4), placing personal ambition above family loyalty.

• He led Judah astray, causing the nation to “practice idolatry” (v. 11).

• He ignored prophetic warning (vv. 12-15) and refused to repent.

Sin always corrodes relationships and destroys reputations; Jehoram’s life proves it.

Principles for a Positive Legacy

Scripture offers clear, practical steps to ensure our lives leave a godly imprint:

1. Cultivate righteousness

Proverbs 10:7: “The memory of the righteous is a blessing, but the name of the wicked will rot.”

• A consistent pattern of obedience and integrity plants seeds that outlive us.

2. Invest in people

Acts 9:36: “At Joppa, there was a disciple named Tabitha… who was always occupied with works of kindness and charity.”

• Dorcas is still remembered because she served real needs in real lives.

3. Walk humbly with God

Micah 6:8 calls us to “walk humbly with your God.” When the Lord is central, pride fades and relationships flourish.

4. Finish well

2 Timothy 4:7-8: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith…”

• Perseverance crowns a life of faithfulness and inspires those who follow.

5. Guard your name

Ecclesiastes 7:1: “A good name is better than fine perfume…”

• Character is the fragrance people remember long after we are gone.

Living Out These Principles Today

• Prioritize daily time in Scripture and prayer; godly choices flow from an anchored heart.

• Serve quietly and consistently—visit the lonely, mentor the young, give generously.

• Seek reconciliation quickly; unresolved conflicts tarnish testimony.

• Celebrate others’ successes; humility endears, jealousy repels.

• Keep eternity in view; decisions made with Heaven’s horizon in mind echo forever.

Encouraging Scriptures on a Lasting Legacy

Psalm 112:6: “Surely he will never be shaken; the righteous man will be remembered forever.”

Hebrews 6:10: “God is not unjust; He will not forget your work and the love you have shown for His name…”

Matthew 5:16: “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Jehoram’s story warns, but these promises invite. Live for Christ, love people, finish strong—then, instead of “no one’s regret,” our memory will resound as a blessing to generations.
