How to deepen understanding of Jesus?
How can we seek deeper understanding of Jesus' teachings today?

Setting the scene

Matthew 13:10 tells us, “Then the disciples came to Him and asked, ‘Why do You speak to the people in parables?’” The disciples did not settle for surface hearing; they pressed in for clarity. Their simple step of coming to Jesus shows the starting point for anyone wanting richer insight today.

The disciples’ example: stay close and ask

• They approached Jesus privately (Mark 4:34).

• They expected a direct, literal answer (Matthew 13:11).

• They listened until He finished explaining (Matthew 13:36).

• They received truths others missed, simply because they asked.

Scripture’s invitation to seek

• Every word of the Bible is “God-breathed and useful” (2 Timothy 3:16-17), so digging deeper is never wasted effort.

Psalm 119:18: “Open my eyes that I may behold wondrous things from Your law.”

Proverbs 2:1-6 promises understanding to those who “seek it like silver.”

James 1:5 assures that God “gives generously to all” who lack wisdom.

Practical pathways to deeper understanding

• Daily, unhurried reading: take smaller portions and linger over them.

• Prayerful dependence on the Spirit: John 14:26—He “will teach you all things.”

• Compare Scripture with Scripture; let clearer passages explain harder ones (Acts 17:11).

• Keep a journal of insights, noting context, key words, and how the passage reveals Christ.

• Memorize pivotal verses to turn them over in the mind day and night (Psalm 1:2).

• Obey promptly; John 7:17 links willing obedience with greater discernment.

Guarding a receptive heart

The parable of the soils (Matthew 13:18-23) shows that understanding thrives in a heart free from hardness, shallowness, and competing loves. Regular repentance, gratitude, and focus on eternal priorities keep the soil tender.

Community matters

• Gather with believers who honor the full authority of the Word (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Listen to pastors and teachers Christ has given the church (Ephesians 4:11-13).

• Test every teaching by Scripture itself, like the noble Bereans (Acts 17:11).

Living what we learn

• Put insights into action; “If you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them” (John 13:17).

• Share truths with others; teaching reinforces personal understanding (Philemon 6).

• Continually revisit Jesus’ words—repetition deepens roots (2 Peter 1:12-13).

Key passages to keep near

Psalm 119:130 “The unfolding of Your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple.”

1 Corinthians 2:12 “We have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us.”

John 15:15 “I have called you friends, for everything I have learned from My Father I have made known to you.”

In a sentence

Deeper understanding comes the same way it did for the Twelve—stay close to Jesus in the Word, rely on His Spirit, obey what is revealed, and keep seeking until every parable, promise, and precept lights up with the clarity He delights to give.
