How can we discern God's calling in our lives like Jehu did? Jehu’s Moment of Clarity 2 Kings 9:11: “When Jehu went out to the servants of his master, they asked, ‘Is everything all right? Why did this madman come to you?’ ‘You know very well the man and his message,’ he replied.” Jehu has just been anointed king in a private room. He steps out carrying a fresh, unmistakable sense of divine commission. What Jehu Does—and What We Can Learn • Receives a clear word rooted in prophetic authority (vv. 1–6). • Takes the message seriously and immediately (v. 11b shows no hesitation). • Allows others to confirm the call (vv. 12–13; the officers spread their garments). • Proceeds in obedience despite potential opposition (chap. 9–10). Guidelines for Discerning God’s Call Today • Anchor everything in Scripture—God never contradicts His written Word (Psalm 119:105). • Seek the Spirit’s inner witness—He testifies with our spirit (Romans 8:14–16). • Listen for godly confirmation—wise counsel affirms and refines (Proverbs 11:14). • Observe providential circumstances—doors the Lord opens no one can shut (Revelation 3:7–8). • Move forward in obedient faith—doers, not hearers only (James 1:22). Supporting Passages • 1 Samuel 3:10—Samuel responds, “Speak, for Your servant is listening.” • Isaiah 30:21—“Your ears will hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way.’” • Proverbs 3:5–6—Trust and acknowledge Him; He directs paths. • John 10:27—Sheep know the Shepherd’s voice. • Romans 12:1–2—A renewed mind discerns God’s good, pleasing, perfect will. • Acts 13:2–3—The church discerns and sends Saul and Barnabas after prayer and fasting. Obstacles to Discernment and Their Remedies • Noise and busyness—practice solitude and Scripture meditation. • Doubt—recall past faithfulness; feed on promises such as Numbers 23:19. • Fear of man—fix eyes on the One who calls (Galatians 1:10). • Impatience—rest in God’s timing; He makes everything beautiful in its time (Ecclesiastes 3:11). Putting It into Practice This Week • Read 2 Kings 9–10 alongside the cross-references above. • Set aside focused time each day for prayerful listening. • Invite one mature believer to speak into what you sense God is prompting. • Act on the smallest confirmed step, trusting the Lord to illuminate the next, just as He did for Jehu. |
