How to eliminate today's idols?
In what ways can we remove modern-day idols from our lives today?

Setting the Scene

“So Jehu eradicated Baal from Israel.” (2 Kings 10:28)

Jehu’s bold act shows that idols are not just ancient statues; they’re anything that steals the devotion God deserves.

The Heart of Idolatry: Anything Before God

Exodus 20:3 — “You shall have no other gods before Me.”

Matthew 22:37 — “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ ”

1 John 5:21 — “Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”

Idolatry is giving ultimate trust, love, or obedience to something or someone other than the Lord.

Recognizing Our Modern Baals

• Money & possessions

• Success, career, or education status

• Relationships or family expectations

• Entertainment, gaming, streaming, social media

• Body image, fitness, health obsessions

• Political causes or leaders

• Personal comfort, control, or security

If losing any of these would threaten our sense of worth, we may be bowing to an idol.

Steps to Tear Down Today’s Idols

1. Examine the heart

Psalm 139:23-24 — Invite God to “search me… and lead me.”

• Honest journaling or accountability conversations expose hidden allegiances.

2. Renounce and repent

Acts 3:19 — “Repent… that your sins may be wiped away.”

• Confess specific idolatries; turn decisively from them.

3. Remove tangible temptations

Matthew 5:29 — If an eye causes sin, “tear it out.”

• Uninstall apps, set spending limits, declutter material excess, end unhealthy subscriptions or relationships.

4. Replace with wholehearted worship

Colossians 3:5 — “Put to death… greed, which is idolatry.”

• Cultivate regular praise, Scripture reading, and Christ-centered playlists or podcasts.

5. Renew the mind daily

Romans 12:2 — “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

• Memorize verses, meditate on God’s character, read biographies of faithful believers.

6. Re-prioritize time, talent, treasure

Matthew 6:21 — “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

• Budget generosity first, schedule service before entertainment, anchor routines around fellowship and worship.

7. Remain in biblical community

Hebrews 10:24-25 — “Consider how to spur one another on… not neglecting to meet together.”

• Small groups and trusted friends help monitor creeping idols and celebrate victories.

Walking in Sustained Freedom

Galatians 5:1 — “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.”

1 Corinthians 10:14 — “Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.”

Philippians 3:8 — Count “all things as loss compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ.”

When Jesus reigns at the center, the Baals of modern life lose their grip, and like Jehu, we can say they have been eradicated from our hearts.
