How to endure hardships Christ-like?
In what ways can we endure hardships while maintaining a Christ-like attitude?

Setting the Scene: Paul’s Example in 1 Corinthians 4:12

“ …when we are reviled, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it.”

Paul describes three simultaneous actions:

• He keeps working with his own hands—no quitting.

• He answers insults with blessing—no bitterness.

• He accepts persecution with perseverance—no retaliation.

This snapshot frames our study on enduring hardship like Christ.

What Christ-like Endurance Looks Like

• Bless the offender, not the offense (Luke 6:27-28; Romans 12:14).

• Absorb wrongs without seeking revenge (1 Peter 2:21-23).

• Keep serving faithfully in ordinary tasks (Colossians 3:23-24).

• Remain joyful and hopeful (James 1:2-4; Romans 12:12).

• Fix eyes on Jesus, who endured the cross for the joy set before Him (Hebrews 12:1-3).

Practical Ways to Bless When Reviled

1. Speak words of goodwill: a sincere “thank you” or “I’m praying for you” (Proverbs 15:1).

2. Do a tangible act of kindness—send a note, provide a meal (Matthew 5:44).

3. Refuse gossip; protect the offender’s reputation (Ephesians 4:29).

4. Pray specifically for the person’s growth and salvation (1 Timothy 2:1).

5. Remember God’s mercy toward you, fueling mercy toward them (Ephesians 2:4-5).

Guarding the Heart During Persecution

• Anchor identity in Christ, not in others’ opinions (Galatians 2:20).

• Meditate on Scriptures of God’s sovereignty (Psalm 46:1-2).

• Journal thankfulness daily to keep perspective (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

• Confess any rising resentment immediately (1 John 1:9).

• Fellowship with believers who will encourage steadfastness (Hebrews 10:24-25).

Strengthened by Promises of Scripture

• God works all things for good (Romans 8:28).

• Trials refine faith like gold (1 Peter 1:6-7).

• Christ’s power rests on weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9-10).

• Present sufferings are not worth comparing with coming glory (Romans 8:18).

• The Lord is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18).

Walking It Out This Week

• Identify one ongoing hardship; write how you can “bless” within it.

• Choose a promise verse above; memorize and recite when pressure rises.

• Perform one hidden act of service, imitating Paul’s “working with our own hands.”

• Thank God nightly for His sustaining grace, noting any evidence of Christ-like attitude.
