How to face opposition in evangelism?
How can we prepare for opposition when spreading the Gospel message?

Opposition Has Always Followed the Gospel

Acts 28:22 – “But we consider your views worth hearing, because we know that people everywhere are speaking against this sect.”

• Long before social media or modern news cycles, word spread that the church was controversial.

• The Jewish leaders in Rome had not yet heard Paul’s side, but they had already heard the criticism.

• Scripture treats such push-back as normal, not exceptional.

Expect the Push-Back

John 15:18-20 – “If the world hates you, understand that it hated Me first… If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you as well.”

2 Timothy 3:12 – “Indeed, all who desire to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.”

• Knowing this in advance keeps us from surprise or discouragement. Opposition is confirmation, not contradiction, of faithful witness.

Stay Grounded in Truth

Acts 28 shows Paul calmly presenting Scripture from morning till evening (v. 23). Truth, not temperament, carried the day.

1 Peter 3:15 – “Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you, but respond with gentleness and respect.”

Ephesians 6:10-12 – Put on the full armor of God; our struggle is ultimately spiritual, so we rely on divine resources.

Practical helps:

– Daily Bible intake to keep convictions clear.

– Memorize key verses that explain the Gospel and answer common objections.

– Study basic apologetics so confidence grows when questions arise.

Cultivate Christlike Character

• Paul’s critics could not point to moral failure; they only disagreed with his message (Acts 24:16; 28:17).

1 Peter 3:16 – Maintain a clear conscience, “so that those who slander you may be put to shame by your good behavior in Christ.”

Romans 12:21 – “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

When our lives match our lips, slander loses power.

Rely on Prayer and Fellowship

Acts 4:29-31 – Early believers prayed for boldness; God answered with fresh filling and courage.

• Shared prayer meetings, accountability, and mutual encouragement strengthen resolve when criticism intensifies.

See Opposition as Opportunity

Acts 28:23-24 – Because people were “speaking against” the faith, Paul was invited to explain it fully; some were persuaded.

Philippians 1:12-14 – Imprisonment advanced the Gospel and emboldened other believers.

Opposition often widens the platform for proclamation and sharpens the message.

Summary Checklist for Readiness

• Expect resistance; don’t personalize it.

• Stay immersed in Scripture; know the Gospel thoroughly.

• Wear the armor of God—truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, the Word, prayer.

• Walk in integrity so critics find no foothold.

• Lean on the church family for courage and perspective.

• Look for the open doors controversy can create.

Following these patterns from Acts 28 and the broader New Testament equips us to face opposition with steadiness, grace, and enduring hope.
