How to feel God's presence in tough times?
In what ways can you experience God's presence during challenging times?

The Soul That Clings

“My soul clings to You; Your right hand upholds me.” (Psalm 63:8)

David is in the wilderness, hunted and exhausted, yet he doesn’t merely ask for relief—he presses in. The verb “clings” pictures a desperate, determined embrace. Hard places become holy places when you refuse to let go of the One who refuses to let go of you.

Experiencing His Presence in the Pressure

• Worship in the dark

– God “is enthroned on the praises of Israel” (Psalm 22:3).

– Even chained in prison, Paul and Silas sang, and the whole cell block felt the nearness of God (Acts 16:25).

Choose a song of truth and sing until your heart catches up.

• Feed on Scripture

– “This is my comfort in affliction, that Your promise preserves my life.” (Psalm 119:50)

– “Through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures, we might have hope.” (Romans 15:4)

Read aloud, write out a verse, repeat it through the day; God’s voice cuts through the noise.

• Pray with transparency

– “Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:6-7)

– As worries surface, hand them to the Lord by name; His peace stands guard over mind and heart (Philippians 4:6-7).

• Obey in the small things

– “Whoever has My commandments and keeps them… I will love him and reveal Myself to him.” (John 14:21)

Every “yes, Lord” clears space for clearer vision of Him.

• Lean into fellowship

– “Where two or three gather in My name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

– Spur one another on; don’t isolate (Hebrews 10:24-25).

A trusted believer’s presence often becomes the tangible reminder of God’s.

• Remember past deliverances

– “I will remember the works of the LORD.” (Psalm 77:11-12)

– Rehearsing testimonies fuels present faith and invites fresh encounters.

• Surrender the outcome

– “Come to Me… and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

– His yoke fits; release what you cannot control and experience the strong shoulder beside you.

• Serve others out of your own need

– God “comforts us… so that we can comfort those in any trouble.” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)

Pouring out the comfort you’re receiving keeps your soul aware of the flow of His presence.

• Rest in His sovereignty

– “God works all things together for the good of those who love Him.” (Romans 8:28)

Confidence in His plan steadies the heart against panic.

• Practice gratitude

– “Give thanks in every circumstance.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

Thankfulness turns the spotlight onto God’s continual activity.

The Upholding Right Hand

“Your right hand upholds me.” David anchors his hope not in his grip on God but in God’s grip on him.

• “I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)

• “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1)

Even when your grasp weakens, His never does. Awareness of that steadfast hold is itself the experience of His presence.

Habits That Keep You Close

1. Begin the day reading a portion of Scripture aloud.

2. Pause at set times (phone alarms help) to whisper a sentence of praise.

3. Keep a running gratitude list.

4. Meet weekly with at least one believer for mutual encouragement.

5. End the day by recalling where you noticed God’s hand.

Cling to Him; He is already holding you.
