How to find God's guidance in new times?
What steps can we take to seek God's direction in unfamiliar situations?

Setting the Scene: Genesis 20:1

“Now Abraham journeyed from there to the Negev region and settled between Kadesh and Shur. While he lived in Gerar,”

Abraham has just entered unfamiliar territory. What follows in the chapter—his half-truth about Sarah and God’s gracious intervention—underscores our need to seek clear direction whenever we step into the unknown.

Step 1: Recognize the Need for Fresh Guidance

• New places, roles, or decisions call for renewed dependence.

• Even a seasoned believer like Abraham could stumble when he assumed rather than asked.

Proverbs 3:5-6—“Trust in the LORD with all your heart… He will make your paths straight.”

Step 2: Pause and Humble Your Heart

• Slowing down keeps fear or impulse from steering the choice.

Psalm 46:10—“Be still and know that I am God.”

• Humility invites God’s leadership (1 Peter 5:6).

Step 3: Pray Specifically for Wisdom

James 1:5—“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God… and it will be given to him.”

• Name the situation, ask for clarity, and expect an answer grounded in God’s character.

Step 4: Search Scripture for Clear Principles

Psalm 119:105—“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

• Look for commands, warnings, and examples that parallel your decision.

• In Genesis 20, the command against false witness would have steered Abraham away from deception.

Step 5: Listen for the Spirit’s Prompting

Isaiah 30:21—“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’”

• Inner conviction will never contradict written Scripture.

Step 6: Seek Godly Counsel

Proverbs 15:22—“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.”

• Invite input from mature believers who know Scripture and your circumstances.

Step 7: Obey Promptly and Leave the Results to God

Genesis 20:17—Abraham prays for Abimelech once he obeys God’s correction; healing follows.

Romans 12:2—“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed… so that you may prove what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.”

• Obedience often confirms direction more than analysis alone.

Step 8: Review, Give Thanks, and Adjust

Psalm 32:8—“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with My loving eye on you.”

• Look back to celebrate God’s faithfulness and learn from any missteps, as Abraham did.

Walking Forward with Confidence

When unfamiliar paths arise, we can navigate them by pausing, praying, searching Scripture, listening, seeking counsel, obeying, and reviewing. God guided Abraham despite his detours; He will faithfully direct all who seek Him with the same intentional steps.

How should we respond when facing fear, as Abraham did in Genesis 20:1?
