How to find truth amid unjust authority?
How can we discern truth when authorities make unjust decisions, as in Luke 23:15?

Setting the Scene in Luke 23:15

“Neither has Herod done anything deserving death. He has done nothing worthy of death.” (Luke 23:15)

• Pilate acknowledged Jesus’ innocence yet still yielded to pressure, illustrating how leaders can recognize truth yet choose injustice.

Recognizing the Reality of Human Authority

• “There is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been appointed by God.” (Romans 13:1)

• Authorities are real, divinely permitted, yet fallible. Knowing this keeps us from shock when injustice appears.

Understanding God’s Sovereign Purpose

• “The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the LORD; He directs it wherever He pleases.” (Proverbs 21:1)

• Even corrupt decisions fit within God’s larger redemptive plan (Acts 2:23). Discernment begins by trusting His control.

Testing Decisions Against the Word

• “The Bereans were more noble-minded… examining the Scriptures daily to see if these teachings were true.” (Acts 17:11)

• “To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn.” (Isaiah 8:20)

• Any ruling that contradicts clear Scriptural principles is unjust; Scripture remains the plumb line.

Listening to the Spirit’s Witness

• “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth.” (John 16:13)

• “You have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.” (1 John 2:20, 27)

• The Spirit confirms or unsettles our hearts regarding a decision’s righteousness.

Looking to Christ’s Example

• “Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example… He committed no sin… when He suffered, He made no threats but entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly.” (1 Peter 2:21-23)

• Jesus modeled discernment without rebellion: recognizing injustice yet submitting to the Father’s will.

Responding with Wisdom and Courage

• When commands clash with God’s Word: “Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God’s sight to listen to you rather than God.” (Acts 4:19-20)

• Civil disobedience may be necessary, but always with respect (Daniel 3; 6).

• Seek lawful means of appeal (Acts 25:11).

Practicing Discernment Daily

• Prayerful reading of Scripture before forming opinions.

• Consult mature, biblically grounded believers (Proverbs 11:14).

• Observe the fruit: does the decision promote righteousness, justice, and love (Matthew 7:16-18)?

• Maintain humility—be willing to revise views as the Word clarifies.

Holding Fast to Hope

• “Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him, and He will act… He will bring forth your righteousness like the dawn.” (Psalm 37:5-7)

• Ultimate justice is certain: “I saw heaven standing open… the One riding it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges.” (Revelation 19:11)
