How to follow biblically aligned leaders?
What steps ensure we follow leaders aligned with biblical truth, not "blind guides"?

Focus Verse

“Disregard them; they are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.” — Matthew 15:14

Recognize the Unchanging Standard

• Scripture alone defines truth (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

• Any voice that contradicts or dilutes the written Word disqualifies itself, no matter how persuasive or popular (Galatians 1:8).

Test the Message, Not Just the Personality

• Compare every teaching to the plain meaning of Scripture, taken in context (Acts 17:11).

• Ask, “Does this line up with the whole counsel of God, or is it selective and self-serving?”

• Reject anything that adds to or subtracts from what God has revealed (Revelation 22:18-19).

Examine the Leader’s Fruit

• Jesus said, “You will recognize them by their fruit” (Matthew 7:16).

• Look for:

– Evident love, joy, peace, patience (Galatians 5:22-23).

– Humble, servant-hearted leadership (Mark 10:42-45).

– Integrity in finances, family life, and relationships (1 Timothy 3:2-5).

• Consistent, godly fruit affirms the message; corrupt fruit exposes a blind guide.

Confirm Sound Doctrine and Lifestyle

• Leaders must “hold firmly to the trustworthy word as taught” (Titus 1:9).

• Doctrine and daily living must match; hypocrisy signals danger (Matthew 23:3-4).

Seek Alignment with Christ’s Character

• The ultimate model is Jesus Himself (1 Peter 2:21).

• Leaders who reflect His humility, holiness, and compassion guide well; those who exalt self lead into pits (Philippians 2:5-8).

Value Accountability and Transparency

• Healthy leadership invites correction and submits to fellow elders (Proverbs 27:17; Hebrews 13:17).

• Secretive or authoritarian patterns often mask error and abuse.

Cultivate Personal Discernment

• Walk in the Spirit, who guides “into all truth” (John 16:13).

• Regular, prayerful Bible study sharpens discernment, preventing blind dependence on any human leader (Psalm 119:105).

Live as a Berean Believer

• The Bereans “examined the Scriptures daily to see if these teachings were true” (Acts 17:11).

• Make this your rhythm: hear, verify, embrace what aligns with God’s Word, and discard the rest.

Following these steps keeps us safely in the light of biblical truth and out of the ditch where blind guides inevitably lead.
