How to fortify spiritual cities today?
How can we ensure our spiritual "strong cities" remain fortified today?

The verse in focus

“In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah: ‘We have a strong city; He sets up salvation as walls and ramparts.’” (Isaiah 26:1)

Why the picture matters today

Isaiah paints salvation itself as our walls and ramparts. The Lord is both architect and foundation. Our task is to live inside what He has provided—never letting the gates sag or the watchtowers sit empty.

Common threats to a modern “strong city”

• Compromise with sin (James 4:4)

• Neglect of Scripture (Matthew 4:4)

• Prayerlessness (Luke 22:46)

• Isolation from other believers (Hebrews 10:25)

• Unchecked thoughts and media intake (Proverbs 4:23)

God’s blueprint for ongoing fortification

1. Guard the gates – Stay watchful over what enters heart and mind

• “I will set no worthless thing before my eyes.” (Psalm 101:3)

• “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23)

2. Strengthen the walls – Keep doctrine sound and Scripture central

• “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.” (Colossians 3:16)

• “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching.” (Acts 2:42)

3. Maintain the watchtowers – Cultivate vigilant prayer

• “Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers.” (Ephesians 6:18)

• “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” (Colossians 4:2)

4. Stock the armory – Wield the Word in spiritual warfare

• “The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” (Ephesians 6:17)

• “The weapons of our warfare are not the weapons of the world.” (2 Corinthians 10:4)

5. Repair breaches quickly – Confess and repent without delay

• “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive.” (1 John 1:9)

• “Whoever conceals his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.” (Proverbs 28:13)

6. Build with community – Lean on godly fellowship and accountability

• “Two are better than one... a cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9–12)

• “Consider how to spur one another on toward love and good deeds.” (Hebrews 10:24)

7. Honor the King – Live under Christ’s authority and obey promptly

• “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” (John 14:15)

• “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)

Everyday practices that keep the walls high

• Set aside daily, unhurried time in the Word; read, meditate, memorize.

• Pray both defensively (for protection) and offensively (for kingdom advance).

• Fast periodically to sharpen dependence on God.

• Choose entertainment and news with Philippians 4:8 as the filter.

• Meet regularly with a small group for encouragement and accountability.

• Serve in your local congregation—shared mission strengthens unity.

• Keep short accounts with God and people; forgive quickly.

• Celebrate God’s victories; testimony raises morale within the walls.

Promises when the city is secure

• “You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” (Isaiah 26:3)

• “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” (Proverbs 18:10)

• “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1)

Final encouragement

The walls stand because salvation belongs to the Lord. Our vigilance does not replace His saving work; it responds to it. As we guard the gates, fortify the walls, and keep watch together, we live out Isaiah’s song: “We have a strong city.”
