How to foster unity and avoid quarrels?
What practical steps promote unity and prevent "quarrels" in our congregation?

Quarrels Reported, Unity Endangered

1 Corinthians 1:11: “My brothers and sisters, Chloe’s household has informed me that there are quarrels among you.”

Paul’s words are a wake-up call. Quarrels fracture fellowship, blur our witness, and grieve the Spirit. Below are practical, Scripture-anchored steps that restore harmony and keep conflict from taking root.

Identify the Roots of Division

• Preferences elevated above the gospel (1 Corinthians 1:12–13)

• Pride and self-promotion (Proverbs 13:10)

• Unchecked anger and careless speech (James 1:19)

• Gossip and partial information (Proverbs 18:8)

First step: name the real issue, not the symptom.

Fix Eyes on One Lord, One Message

1 Corinthians 1:10: “that all of you agree together so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be united in mind and conviction.”

• Keep Christ, not personalities or programs, at the center.

• Regularly rehearse the gospel together—sermons, small groups, songs, testimonies. Unity flows from shared allegiance to Jesus.

Adopt Christlike Attitudes

Ephesians 4:2–3: humility, gentleness, patience, love, diligence.

Philippians 2:2: “being of one mind, having the same love.”

Practical ways:

– Choose deferential words: “How can I serve?” instead of “Why aren’t they doing it my way?”

– Value others’ perspectives; ask before you assume.

– Celebrate wins of other ministries as your own.

Speak the Truth in Love

Proverbs 17:14: “abandon the dispute before it breaks out.”

• Guard tone and timing; a soft answer turns away wrath (Proverbs 15:1).

• Refuse gossip; direct concerns to the person involved.

• Encourage twice as often as you correct.

Pursue Reconciliation Quickly

Matthew 5:23–24: reconcile before you worship.

Matthew 18:15: go privately first; widen the circle only if needed.

• Keep short accounts—daily confession, prompt apologies, eager forgiveness (Ephesians 4:32).

Serve Shoulder to Shoulder

• Shared mission melts personal friction.

• Pair members from different backgrounds on the same ministry team.

• Rotate leadership roles to foster appreciation of diverse gifts (1 Corinthians 12:4–7).

Protect Unity Through Prayer

John 17:21: Jesus prays “that all of them may be one.”

• Pray regularly for leaders, difficult relationships, and Spirit-empowered peace.

• Corporate prayer nights breed empathy; it’s hard to fight someone you’ve prayed with.

Build Up Through Edifying Speech

Ephesians 4:29: words that give grace.

• Make encouragement public and correction private.

• Replace criticism with solution-oriented suggestions.

Stay Anchored in the Word

• Daily Bible intake renews minds (Romans 12:2).

• Teach passages on unity—Psalm 133:1; Colossians 3:13–14; Romans 14:19.

• Memorize verses together; Scripture spoken aloud in conflict diffuses tension.

Live the Bond of Love

Colossians 3:14: “love…is the bond of perfect unity.”

• Love chooses relationship over being right, and forgiveness over resentment.

• When love leads, quarrels retreat and the congregation shines with gospel light.
