How to handle family as faith foes?
How should believers respond when family becomes "enemies" due to faith?

Setting the Scene

Matthew 10:34-36

“Do not assume that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn

‘a man against his father,

a daughter against her mother,

a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.

A man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’”

Why Division Happens

• Christ’s call is exclusive; loyalty to Him confronts competing loyalties (Matthew 10:37).

• Light and darkness cannot partner (2 Corinthians 6:14).

• The gospel exposes sin, stirring resistance (John 3:19-20).

• Spiritual war, not mere family squabble, is the deeper issue (Ephesians 6:12).

How Should We Respond?

• Choose Jesus first

– “Whoever does not take up his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me” (Matthew 10:38).

– Resolve that no earthly tie outranks loyalty to the Lord.

• Keep loving, speaking truth with grace

– Bless those who curse you (Romans 12:14).

– “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44).

– Maintain honor and respect (1 Peter 3:15-16).

• Refuse retaliation

– “Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult” (1 Peter 3:9).

– Leave room for God’s justice (Romans 12:17-19).

• Stay hopeful for their salvation

– Unbelieving family may be “won without words” by a consistent, gentle life (1 Peter 3:1-2).

– Pray persistently; God’s arm is not too short to save (Isaiah 59:1).

• Draw strength from the spiritual family

– The church supplies support, wisdom, and practical help (Mark 10:29-30; Galatians 6:2).

– Fellowship combats isolation.

• Guard your heart

– Avoid bitterness (Hebrews 12:15).

– Keep forgiving as Christ forgave you (Ephesians 4:32).

• Maintain clear, kind boundaries

– Peace as far as it depends on you (Romans 12:18).

– Refuse sinful compromise while still showing honor.

Encouragement for the Journey

• Suffering for Christ is evidence of belonging to Him (2 Timothy 3:12).

• The Spirit supplies courage and words (Matthew 10:19-20).

• Present grief is temporary; eternal joy is certain (Romans 8:18).

• God records every sacrifice (Hebrews 6:10).

Promises to Hold Onto

• “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)

• “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” (Exodus 14:14)

• “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” (Acts 16:31)

Practical Next Steps

1. Spend daily time in Scripture and prayer to keep perspective.

2. Identify one tangible way to bless resistant family members this week.

3. Share your struggle with a mature believer for prayer and accountability.

4. Memorize Matthew 10:34-39 to anchor your resolve.

Holding fast to Christ, you can walk in love, courage, and unshakeable hope even when those dearest become your fiercest critics.
