How to handle opposition to God's truth?
How should we respond when facing opposition for sharing God's truth?

Setting the Scene

Jeremiah 26 records two contrasting prophets—Jeremiah, who stays in Judah under threat, and Uriah, who flees to Egypt.

Jeremiah 26:22: “Then King Jehoiakim sent men to Egypt—Elnathan son of Achbor along with some other men.”

• The king’s pursuit of Uriah shows how far opposition can go when hearts resist God’s truth.

The Reality of Opposition

• Scripture never hides the cost of proclaiming God’s Word (2 Timothy 3:12).

• Hostility may come from governing authorities (Acts 4:18–21), religious leaders (John 9:22), or even loved ones (Matthew 10:21-22).

• Like Jehoiakim, opponents often try to silence truth rather than consider it (Jeremiah 26:8-11).

Lessons from Uriah and Jeremiah

• Uriah fled, hoping distance would spare him, yet the king’s reach found him (vv. 20-23). Flight brought no lasting safety.

• Jeremiah remained, trusting the Lord and entrusting his life to God’s justice (v. 14). God protected him through sympathetic officials (vv. 24).

• Faithfulness does not guarantee earthly ease, but it keeps us within God’s protective purpose.

Courage Rooted in God’s Sovereignty

• God oversees rulers’ limits (Proverbs 21:1). Jehoiakim’s power extended only as God allowed.

• “The LORD is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” (Hebrews 13:6).

• Kingdom perspective shifts fear from human threats to reverent awe of God (Matthew 10:28).

Practical Steps When Opposition Comes

• Reaffirm the message—review the Scriptures you’re sharing to anchor confidence (Jeremiah 1:9).

• Pray for boldness, not escape (Acts 4:29-31).

• Speak with grace and respect (1 Peter 3:14-16).

• Stand firm yet peaceably—“overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:17-21).

• Wear spiritual armor daily (Ephesians 6:10-18).

• Lean on the fellowship of believers; Jeremiah had Ahikam’s support (Jeremiah 26:24).

Promised Blessings for Faithfulness

• “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake” (Matthew 5:10-12).

• A future crown awaits those who persevere (James 1:12; Revelation 2:10).

• Confessing Christ before men secures His acknowledgment before the Father (Matthew 10:32).

Closing Encouragement

Opposition is neither strange nor wasted. Like Jeremiah, stay where God assigns, speak what He commands, and trust Him with outcomes. The same Lord who measured Jehoiakim’s reach also measures every threat we face—and He promises eternal honor to those who remain faithful.
