What actions can we take to honor God's presence in our lives? Glimpsing Reverence in a Short Verse 1 Samuel 6:16: “When the five lords of the Philistines saw this, they returned to Ekron that same day.” The Philistine rulers had mishandled the ark and suffered for it. Once they saw the ark safely offered back to God with burnt offerings at Beth-shemesh, they quietly left. Their swift exit models a handful of attitudes and actions that still honor God’s presence today. Actions That Honor His Presence • Recognize His holiness – Exodus 3:5: “Do not come any closer… the place where you are standing is holy ground.” – Pause, acknowledge, and treat every moment as sacred because He is near. • Acknowledge His works – Psalm 46:8: “Come, behold the works of the LORD.” – Keep your eyes open for God’s activity, then respond with gratitude rather than casual indifference. • Release what belongs to Him – The Philistines let go of the ark; we let go of possessions, plans, and control that rightly belong to the Lord (Psalm 24:1). • Offer fitting worship – 1 Samuel 6:14 speaks of the people offering the cows as a burnt offering; Hebrews 12:28 echoes: “Let us offer to God acceptable worship with reverence and awe.” – Sing, serve, give—do whatever displays His worth. • Maintain reverence – 1 Samuel 6:20: “Who can stand in the presence of the LORD, this holy God?” – Avoid flippant talk about spiritual things; cultivate a wholesome fear that guards against careless sin. • Purge competing loyalties – 1 Samuel 7:3: “Rid yourselves of the foreign gods… and serve Him only.” – Identify idols (money, status, screen time) and dismantle them so God holds first place. • Keep clean hands and a pure heart – Psalm 24:3-4: “Who may ascend the hill of the LORD?… He who has clean hands and a pure heart.” – Confess sin quickly, forgive freely, and pursue integrity in work, relationships, and leisure. • Live as a walking temple – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20: “Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit… therefore glorify God in your body.” – Honor His presence by what you watch, eat, say, and do; every choice either welcomes or dismisses Him. • Walk humbly and obediently – Micah 6:8: “He has shown you… what is good… to walk humbly with your God.” – Humility keeps us responsive to His voice and quick to obey. Putting It into Daily Practice 1. Start each day by acknowledging, “Lord, this ground is holy because You are here.” 2. Keep a running list of God-sightings and thank Him immediately. 3. Surrender one area of control today—schedule, finances, or ambitions. 4. Build simple worship rhythms: a song during the commute, a whispered praise when you finish a task. 5. Review the day each evening: confess sin, celebrate victories, reset your heart for undivided devotion. Honoring God’s presence is less about dramatic gestures and more about steady, reverent responsiveness—just like those Philistine lords who, once they recognized His hand, stepped back and let God be God. |
