How can we honor God with excellence in our own "temples" today? The verse at the center 2 Chronicles 2:5: “The temple I am going to build will be great, for our God is greater than all gods.” Why the original temple mattered • Only the best materials—cedar, gold, fine linen (1 Kings 6–7) • Skilled craftsmen chosen for their mastery (2 Chronicles 2:7) • Everything sized, shaped, and set apart for one purpose: to display the surpassing worth of the Lord What “great” looks like in our own temples today God no longer dwells in stone houses alone; He indwells His people. 1 Corinthians 6:19–20: “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you…? Therefore glorify God in your body.” Romans 12:1: “Present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual service of worship.” Practical ways to honor Him with excellence Mind • Fill it with truth (Philippians 4:8). • Guard it from clutter and compromise (2 Corinthians 10:5). Body • Pursue purity—flee anything that defiles (1 Thessalonians 4:3–4). • Care for health and strength as stewardship, not vanity. Speech • Speak words “seasoned with salt” (Colossians 4:6). • Refuse gossip, coarse joking, or half-truths (Ephesians 4:29). Work • Serve “with all your heart, as working for the Lord” (Colossians 3:23). • Strive for craftsmanship and integrity, whether seen or unseen. Relationships • Practice forgiveness and honor (Ephesians 4:32). • Keep covenants; let yes be yes and no be no (Matthew 5:37). Worship • Engage fully—mind, emotion, will (Psalm 103:1). • Order personal devotion with the same care Solomon ordered stones—regular, intentional, reverent. Stewardship • Give firstfruits, not leftovers (Proverbs 3:9). • Budget time and resources so that Christ’s priorities lead. Cautions along the way • Excellence is not perfectionism; grace leaves room for growth (2 Peter 3:18). • Pride ruins the offering; remember every skill and breath is a gift (1 Corinthians 4:7). • Comparison kills joy; seek to please the Master, not outshine neighbors (Galatians 1:10). Scriptures that reinforce the call • 1 Corinthians 10:31—“Whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.” • Colossians 3:17—“Do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” • 2 Peter 1:5–7—Add “excellence” to your faith and keep building. A closing encouragement Solomon’s glorious temple no longer stands, yet the surpassing glory of the indwelling Spirit remains. As we pursue excellence in thought, body, work, and worship, we declare with our lives that “our God is greater than all gods.” May every choice, crafted with care and offered in love, echo the greatness of the One who lives within us. |
