In what ways can we honor God with our bodies daily? Setting the Scene “...not in lustful passion like the Gentiles who do not know God.” (1 Thessalonians 4:5) Paul has just urged believers to “abstain from sexual immorality” and to “control his own body in holiness and honor” (vv. 3–4). The call is to live differently from a culture that ignores God, treating our bodies as instruments of worship instead of vehicles for self-indulgence. God’s Design for Our Bodies • 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 — “Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit… you are not your own… therefore glorify God in your body.” • Romans 12:1 — present your bodies as “a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God.” • Genesis 1:27, 31 — humanity is created in God’s image and declared “very good,” underscoring the worth of our physical selves. Daily Pathways to Honor Him 1. Guard Purity • Flee sexual immorality (1 Corinthians 6:18). • Set protective boundaries for media, internet, and relationships (Job 31:1). • Dress and behave modestly, aiming to draw attention to Christ rather than self (1 Timothy 2:9-10). 2. Practice Stewardship Through Health • Nourish wisely, exercise, and rest, recognizing your body is on loan from God. • Avoid destructive habits—substance abuse, gluttony, reckless risk-taking (Proverbs 23:20-21). • Seek medical care and Sabbath-like rhythms; fatigue often opens doors to temptation (Mark 6:31). 3. Use Your Body to Serve • Hands that work diligently and generously (Ephesians 4:28). • Feet ready to go where the gospel is needed (Isaiah 52:7; Romans 10:15). • Shoulders that bear one another’s burdens—helping neighbors move, holding a crying child, visiting the sick (Galatians 6:2). 4. Offer Worshipful Movement • Lift voices and posture in praise—singing, kneeling, lifting hands (Psalm 95:6; 1 Timothy 2:8). • Celebrate spiritual milestones with feasts and fellowship that underscore God’s goodness (Deuteronomy 16:14-15). 5. Speak Life • Refrain from coarse joking, gossip, and slander (Ephesians 4:29). • Use your tongue to build up, bless, teach, and encourage (Proverbs 18:21; Colossians 4:6). 6. Rest and Renewal • Sleep in trust, not anxiety (Psalm 4:8). • Take periodic breaks from digital noise; sabbath rest recalibrates desires toward God. Walking by the Spirit, Not the Flesh Galatians 5:16 promises, “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” As we submit each bodily decision—what we watch, eat, text, or touch—to the Spirit’s leading, He empowers us to live set apart. Moment by moment, the body becomes a lived-out testimony that Jesus is Lord over every inch of who we are. |
