How to honor God with our treasures?
How can we ensure our treasures honor God, unlike in Ezekiel 7:20?

Setting the Scene

Ezekiel 7:20: “They transformed the beauty of His ornaments into pride, and they made from them their abominable images—their detestable idols. Therefore I will make these into something filthy for them.”

The verse pictures Judah turning divine gifts into objects of self-exaltation and idolatry. Scripture is accurate and literal, so this warning still speaks today.

What Went Wrong in Ezekiel’s Day

• God’s ornaments were treated as personal trophies rather than holy trust.

• Pride replaced gratitude, twisting beauty into vanity.

• The people fashioned idols from what God had provided, reversing Creator and creation (cf. Romans 1:25).

• Judgment followed because misuse of treasure equals rejection of its Giver.

Timeless Principles for Treasuring God

• Ownership: “The earth is the LORD’s, and the fullness thereof” (Psalm 24:1). Every asset ultimately belongs to Him.

• Worship: Only God deserves ultimate affection; possessions must never rival His place (Exodus 20:3).

• Perspective: “Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven” (Matthew 6:20-21). Eternal reward outlasts earthly gain.

• Humility: “When your silver and gold increase, your heart must not become proud” (Deuteronomy 8:13-14, paraphrased).

• Generosity: “God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7). Giving redirects treasure toward kingdom purposes.

• Stewardship: “Honor the LORD with your wealth” (Proverbs 3:9). Budget, save, spend, and invest under His guidance.

• Contentment: “Keep your lives free from the love of money” (Hebrews 13:5). Satisfaction in Christ protects the heart.

• Accountability: “It is required of stewards that they be found faithful” (1 Corinthians 4:2).

Practical Commitments

• Dedicate every paycheck, gift, or inheritance to God before touching it.

• Set a first-fruits percentage for giving, adjusting upward as He prospers (Malachi 3:10; 1 Timothy 6:18).

• Simplify lifestyle choices so resources remain available for gospel advance, mercy ministries, and family needs.

• Budget prayerfully, viewing every line item as a stewardship decision.

• Reject debt that enslaves future income, keeping room for Spirit-led generosity.

• Review bank and credit statements monthly, asking whether the pattern reflects kingdom priorities.

• Invest time, talents, and treasure in people and projects that spread the knowledge of Christ.

Heart-Level Indicators That Treasure Honors God

• Delight in Christ exceeds delight in acquisitions.

• Gratitude for blessings spills into regular praise.

• Generosity feels joyful, not begrudging.

• Possessions are held with open hands, ready to release if He directs.

• Contentment persists in lean seasons as well as abundant ones.

• Comparison with others loses its grip because identity rests in the Lord.

• Eternal impact guides investment decisions more than short-term returns.

Hope-Filled Motivation

God supplies resources so His people can shine His glory, meet needs, and advance the gospel. When treasure serves those purposes, it multiplies joy now and lays up reward forever. “Command them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, storing up for themselves a treasure as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life” (1 Timothy 6:18-19).
