In what ways can we humbly seek wisdom from God, not ourselves? Job 15:7 — A Sobering Question “Were you the first man ever born? Were you brought forth before the hills?” Eliphaz’s pointed words remind Job—and us—that no human being is the original source of wisdom. Only God holds that position. Recognizing Our Limits • We were not present at creation; our understanding is finite. • The best intellects are still shaped by sin and time; God’s wisdom is eternal and pure. • Admitting this gap is the first step toward humble dependence on Him. Posture of Humble Seeking • Submit your intellect: place every thought under the authority of Scripture rather than above it. • Cultivate teachability: remain willing to be corrected by God’s Word and godly counsel. • Practice reverent silence: make space in prayer to listen instead of continually speaking. • Acknowledge daily need: confess that apart from Him we can do nothing (John 15:5). Practical Steps to Receive His Wisdom 1. Daily Scripture intake – Read, meditate, and memorize; wisdom flows from knowing God’s revealed truth. 2. Dependent prayer – Ask specifically for wisdom, echoing Solomon (1 Kings 3:9) and the promise of James 1:5. 3. Obedient response – Act on what God has already shown; obedience invites further light (Psalm 111:10). 4. Fellowship with wise believers – “Iron sharpens iron” (Proverbs 27:17); seek counsel from those grounded in the Word. 5. Ongoing repentance – Turn from pride whenever it surfaces, keeping a clean channel for God’s guidance (Isaiah 66:2). Supporting Scriptures • Proverbs 3:5-6 – Trust in the LORD, not your own understanding; He will make your paths straight. • Psalm 25:4-5 – “Show me Your ways… teach me Your paths.” • Isaiah 55:8-9 – God’s thoughts are higher than ours. • 1 Corinthians 1:25 – The “foolishness” of God is wiser than human wisdom. Encouragement for Daily Living Each morning offers a fresh chance to echo Job’s realization: we are not the first, the greatest, or the wisest. Yet the One who is invites us to draw near, ask, listen, and walk in the light of His flawless counsel. |
