How to inspire growth in knowledge & control?
How can we encourage others to develop "knowledge" and "self-control" from 2 Peter 1:6?

Verse Focus: 2 Peter 1:6

“and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness”

Why These Two Virtues Belong Together

• Knowledge reveals God’s will; self-control applies it (James 1:22).

• Both guard souls from deception and excess (Proverbs 19:2; 1 Corinthians 9:25).

• Growth in one fuels the other, forming a balanced, Christlike character (Luke 2:52; Galatians 5:22-23).

Encouraging Others to Grow in Knowledge

• Share Scripture openly and often. “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17).

• Offer practical study tools—reading plans, concordances, solid commentaries—so they “rightly handle the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15).

• Tell success stories of transformation through truth (Psalm 119:130).

• Invite them into small-group studies where questions are welcomed and answers come from Scripture (Acts 17:11).

• Challenge them to memorize key verses; stored truth becomes ready counsel (Psalm 119:11).

Encouraging Others to Practice Self-Control

• Model restraint in speech, appetites, spending, and time (1 Timothy 4:12). Example persuades more than lecture.

• Provide accountability relationships: two or three walking in the light together (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10; James 5:16).

• Remind that the Spirit supplies the power: “the fruit of the Spirit is…self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23).

• Teach practical disciplines—scheduled prayer, fasting, budgeting, digital limits—that train the will (1 Corinthians 9:27).

• Encourage immediate obedience. Delayed obedience weakens resolve (Proverbs 6:4-5).

• Celebrate victories, even small ones, reinforcing progress (Philippians 4:8-9).

Scripture Connections That Reinforce Both

Hosea 4:6—lack of knowledge destroys; therefore learn.

Colossians 1:9-10—be filled with knowledge “so as to walk in a manner worthy.”

Titus 2:11-12—grace “trains us…to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives.”

2 Peter 3:18—“grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord.”

Proverbs 25:28—“Like a city broken down and without walls is a man without self-control.”

Practical Steps for a Church or Small Group

1. Schedule a quarterly seminar on a doctrinal theme—doctrine deepens knowledge.

2. Pair newcomers with mature believers for a six-week mentoring track focused on daily Bible reading and lifestyle habits.

3. Launch a “Scripture & Stewardship” challenge: memorize one verse per week and practice one self-control habit alongside it.

4. Share testimonies during gatherings to show real-time fruit.

5. Keep resources visible—loaner Bibles, study guides, reading lists—so next steps are obvious.

Christ: The Perfect Pattern

• He grew “in wisdom” (knowledge) and remained sinless (perfect self-control) (Luke 2:52; Hebrews 4:15).

• He answered temptation with written truth (Matthew 4:1-11), illustrating how knowledge empowers restraint.

• He invites believers to follow His example and supplies grace to succeed (Hebrews 2:18).

End Goal

Encouraging knowledge and self-control in others is about guiding them to know Christ more clearly and mirror Him more closely, so “they may be mature and fully assured in all the will of God” (Colossians 4:12).

In what ways can 'godliness' be cultivated in our daily lives?
