How to keep God's presence with us?
How can we ensure God's presence remains in our lives today?

The Weight of Ichabod

“ ‘The glory has departed from Israel.’ ” (1 Samuel 4:21)

• Israel’s sin, neglect of God’s Word, and reliance on outward symbols cost them the felt nearness of God.

• The name “Ichabod” stands as a sobering reminder that God’s presence is not automatically guaranteed; it is treasured and guarded through faithfulness.

Learning from the Lost Ark

• The ark represented God’s throne among His people (Exodus 25:22). When it was treated like a lucky charm, God withdrew His manifest glory.

• The same pattern appears later in Ezekiel 10:18 when “the glory of the Lord departed from the threshold of the temple.” Departure follows persistent disobedience.

• By contrast, at Solomon’s dedication, “the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord” (1 Kings 8:11), showing that obedient worship invites divine presence.

Recognizing Today’s Causes of Departure

• Cherished sin (Isaiah 59:2; Psalm 66:18)

• Neglect of Scripture (Amos 8:11)

• Hollow religious activity without surrendered hearts (Matthew 15:8)

• Pride and self-reliance (James 4:6)

Ways to Cultivate His Abiding Presence

Daily communion

• Consistent time in the Word: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly” (Colossians 3:16).

• Ongoing prayer: “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

Wholehearted obedience

• “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word. My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.” (John 14:23)

• Immediate repentance when the Spirit convicts (1 John 1:9).

Spirit-filled living

• “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God” (Ephesians 4:30).

• “Be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18) by yielding every area of life to His control.

Gathered worship

• God inhabits the praise of His people (Psalm 22:3).

• Mutual encouragement keeps hearts warm toward Him (Hebrews 10:24-25).

Humble dependence

• “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8).

• Continual acknowledgment that every victory and blessing comes from Him, not from ritual or self-effort.

Living in the Reality of His Glory

• Carry His presence into daily life as mobile “temples” (1 Corinthians 6:19).

• Display His character—love, holiness, truth—so others glimpse His glory through us (Matthew 5:16).

• Anticipate the day when “the dwelling place of God is with man” forever (Revelation 21:3).
