How to keep our faith strong?
How can we prevent our faith from becoming "shipwrecked"?

A live warning from 1 Timothy 1:19

“holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and thereby shipwrecked their faith.”

The picture of a shipwreck

• A vessel meant to reach harbor instead strikes hidden rocks and breaks apart.

• It began the journey sound, yet neglect, bad navigation, or violent storms sent it onto disaster.

• Paul’s image reminds us that believers, too, can founder if they cast aside two essentials: faith and a good conscience.

Anchor 1: Cling to Christ and His Word

2 Timothy 1:13—“Hold on to the pattern of sound teaching…”

• Daily Scripture intake steers the heart; neglect lets currents of culture pull us off course.

• Let doctrine shape convictions, speech, and choices—truth is our compass.

Anchor 2: Cultivate a Clean Conscience

Acts 24:16—Paul “always strove to keep my conscience clear before God and man.”

• Obey promptly when Scripture convicts.

• Refuse habits that dull sensitivity to sin; a seared conscience leaves us unmoored.

Anchor 3: Discern and Reject False Teaching

1 Timothy 4:1—“Some will abandon the faith to follow deceiving spirits…”

• Measure every sermon, podcast, and post against the whole counsel of God (Acts 20:27–30).

• Avoid teachers who undermine Christ’s deity, the gospel of grace, or Scripture’s authority.

Anchor 4: Stay Engaged in the Body of Christ

Hebrews 10:24–25 urges gathering so we “encourage one another… all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

• Fellowship supplies correction, comfort, and course-adjustments impossible in isolation.

• Submit to accountable relationships and church discipline that rescue drifting souls (1 Corinthians 5:5).

Anchor 5: Practice Ongoing Confession and Repentance

1 John 1:9—“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us…”

• Quick repentance keeps barnacles of guilt from slowing spiritual progress.

• Repentance is not a one-time act but the believer’s lifestyle.

Anchor 6: Persevere in Prayer and Dependence on Grace

Hebrews 4:16—Draw near “to receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

• Prayer keeps lines to the Captain open; grace supplies strength no self-effort can.

• Jude 24 celebrates the One “able to keep you from stumbling”—confidence rests in His power, not ours.

Anchor 7: Remember the Costly Examples

1 Timothy 1:20 names Hymenaeus and Alexander, handed over to discipline so they might learn.

• Their fate warns that doctrine abandoned and conscience ignored lead to ruin.

• Let their wreckage mark reefs we steer clear of.

Finishing the voyage

The same Lord who calmed Galilee’s waves now stands on the deck with us. By gripping faith, guarding conscience, and relying on His ever-sufficient grace, we sail past hidden shoals and reach the safe harbor of His eternal kingdom.

What are modern examples of 'shipwrecked' faith, as mentioned in 1 Timothy 1:19?
