How to keep spiritual fervor like John?
How can we maintain our spiritual fervor as John did in John 5:35?

A Lamp That Burned and Shined

“John was a lamp that was burning and shining, and you were willing for a season to bask in his light.” (John 5:35)

Jesus’ words picture John the Baptist as a torch—ablaze with holy passion, radiating truth in a dark world. The verse is brief, yet it offers a pattern for our own lives. How do we keep that same flame burning?

Foundations of an Enduring Flame

• New birth precedes new fire. John’s devotion flowed from a heart already surrendered to God’s purpose (Luke 1:16-17).

• Assurance fuels zeal. John knew exactly who he wasn’t—“I am not the Christ” (John 1:20)—and exactly who he was: a voice pointing to Jesus (John 1:23). Certainty of identity keeps the blaze steady.

• Proximity to Jesus intensifies heat. Even in the womb, John leapt at the Messiah’s presence (Luke 1:41). Ongoing closeness to Christ remains our primary source of warmth.

Practical Ways to Keep the Fire Hot

1. Daily intake of Scripture

• “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)

• Read, meditate, and memorize; the Word supplies constant fuel.

2. Continual communion through prayer and praise

• “Pray without ceasing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17)

• Short bursts of conversation with God during ordinary moments stoke the coals.

3. Ongoing filling of the Holy Spirit

• “Be filled with the Spirit.” (Ephesians 5:18)

• The Spirit is the divine oxygen that keeps embers from dying out.

4. Active obedience

• John called people to repent (Luke 3:3). He lived what he preached.

• Obedience adds fresh logs to the fire—each act of faithfulness enlarges capacity for more zeal.

5. Gospel-centered humility

• “He must increase; I must decrease.” (John 3:30)

• Pride smothers; humility ventilates. Point every spotlight to Christ.

6. Fellowship with other burning ones

• “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” (Proverbs 27:17)

• Shared stories, corporate worship, and mutual accountability create a bonfire effect.

Guarding the Flame Against Extinguishers

• Spiritual complacency: “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.” (Romans 12:11)

• Lingering sin: Unconfessed sin dampens passion; prompt repentance keeps the wick trimmed.

• Overextension: Even lamps need oil. Rest and Sabbath restore supply.

• Worldly entanglements: “Do not love the world.” (1 John 2:15). Loving lesser lights dims the greater.

When the Fire Feels Low

• Recall God’s faithfulness (Lamentations 3:21-23).

• Re-align priorities—simplify to make space for what matters most (Matthew 6:33).

• Re-ignite by service—share the gospel, meet a need; giving light often rekindles our own (Matthew 5:14-16).

Encouragement for Today

Paul urged Timothy, “Fan into flame the gift of God” (2 Timothy 1:6). That command assumes the fire can keep blazing. The same Spirit who empowered John lives in every believer. Keep adding Scripture, prayer, obedience, humility, fellowship, and watch the lamp burn bright—so others may gladly bask in Christ’s light through you.
