How to keep worship God-centered?
What steps can we take to ensure our worship remains focused on God alone?

Setting the Scene: When Worship Went Off-Track

“ When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, crying out in the Lycaonian language, ‘The gods have come down to us in human form!’ ” (Acts 14:11)

The Issue Exposed

• A miracle led the crowd to worship people rather than God.

• Even earnest, religious folks can slide into idolatry the moment they let emotion outrun truth.

Why This Matters Today

• Charismatic personalities, powerful experiences, and cultural pressures still tempt believers to shift glory from the Creator to His creatures.

• Scripture repeatedly warns, “You shall have no other gods before Me” (Exodus 20:3).

Practical Steps to Keep Worship God-Centered

1. Rehearse God’s Exclusivity

• “Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.” (Matthew 4:10)

• Recite passages like Deuteronomy 6:13 and Isaiah 42:8 that affirm He shares His glory with no one.

• Sing songs and read Psalms that spotlight His unique greatness (Psalm 115:1).

2. Measure Every Experience by Scripture

• Paul and Barnabas immediately corrected the crowd with truth (Acts 14:14-15).

• Filter sermons, music, and testimonies through the Word so emotion never outruns revelation (Acts 17:11).

3. Redirect Praise Promptly

• When people applaud our gifts or leaders’ gifts, echo Paul’s response: “We are men, human like you” (Acts 14:15).

• Verbally turn compliments into thanksgiving to God—on the spot.

4. Cultivate Humility in Leaders and Followers

• Leaders model self-forgetful service (1 Peter 5:2-3).

• Believers refuse celebrity culture, remembering, “What do you have that you did not receive?” (1 Corinthians 4:7).

5. Practice Whole-Life Worship

• Offer bodies “as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual service of worship” (Romans 12:1).

• When every act is surrendered to Him, Sunday gatherings become overflow, not obligation.

6. Guard the Heart from Subtle Idols

• Success, comfort, relationships, and technology can quietly dethrone God.

• Pray Psalm 139:23-24 regularly, asking Him to expose rivals.

7. Maintain Corporate Accountability

• Gather with believers who will lovingly confront misplaced devotion (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Elders and worship teams review lyrics and practices to keep Christ central (Colossians 3:16-17).

8. Fuel Awe through Ongoing Revelation of Christ

• Study the Gospels to behold Jesus’ glory (John 1:14).

• Meditate on Revelation 4–5 to glimpse heavenly worship and keep earthly praise aligned.

The Outcome Promised

“Therefore, since we are receiving an unshakable kingdom, let us be filled with gratitude, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe.” (Hebrews 12:28)

By anchoring every emotion, expression, and gathering to God’s Word and glory, believers mirror Paul and Barnabas—deflecting honor to the only One worthy and ensuring worship remains focused on God alone.
