How to live "in, not of" the world?
How can we live as "not of the world" in daily life?

Anchoring in the Key Verse

“They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.” (John 17:16)

What “Not of the World” Does Not Mean

• Pulling away into isolation or despising everyday responsibilities

• A holier-than-thou attitude that looks down on unbelievers

• Abandoning culture, art, or civic life altogether

What It Does Mean

• A new identity and loyalty that centers on Christ (Colossians 3:1-3)

• A lifestyle shaped by Scripture rather than prevailing opinions (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

• A visible distinction that points people to Jesus (1 Peter 2:9)

Daily Practices for Living “Not of the World”

• Start each day in the Word—let God set the agenda before media or messages do (Psalm 119:105)

• Pray through your schedule—invite the Lord into meetings, errands, and family moments (Philippians 4:6-7)

• Speak words that build up, even in small talk, texts, and comments (Ephesians 4:29)

• Choose entertainment thoughtfully—filter shows, music, and apps through Philippians 4:8

• Honor commitments at work or school as service to Christ, not merely to bosses (Colossians 3:23-24)

• Budget time and money with eternity in view—invest in people and kingdom causes (Matthew 6:19-21)

Guarding the Mind

• “Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:2)

• Memorize Scripture; it rewires reflexes when temptation shows up (Psalm 119:11)

Cultivating Distinctive Obedience

• “As obedient children, do not conform to the passions of your former ignorance… ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’” (1 Peter 1:14-16)

• Ask, “What does holiness look like in my phone habits? my humor? my relationships?”

Engaging Culture Without Absorbing It

• “You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world.” (Matthew 5:13-14)

• Salt flavors only by contact; light shines only when present. Live among people, yet keep the flavor of Christ unmistakable.

Strengthened Through Fellowship

• “Let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together.” (Hebrews 10:24-25)

• Small groups and Sunday gatherings recalibrate our hearts and guard against drift.

Depending on the Spirit

• “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16)

• Pause before reactions—invite the Spirit to produce love, joy, and self-control instead of knee-jerk flesh responses (Galatians 5:22-23).

Representing Jesus Everywhere

• “We are therefore ambassadors for Christ.” (2 Corinthians 5:20)

• In conversations, conflicts, or celebrations, remember Whom you represent and act accordingly.

Encouragement from Christ’s Prayer

• “I am not asking that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the evil one.” (John 17:15)

• Our Lord prayed this over us; the Father delights to answer, empowering us to live in the world yet unmistakably His.
