How can we emulate the Philippians' generosity in our own church community? Setting the Scene Philippians 4:18: “I have received full payment and even more. I am fully supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, well-pleasing to God.” Paul describes the Philippians’ gift in three vivid ways: • a fragrant offering • an acceptable sacrifice • well-pleasing to God Their generosity reflects Old Testament sacrificial language (Exodus 29:18) and stands as a model for believers today. The Philippian Example • Consistent: They supported Paul early (Philippians 4:15–16) and kept giving. • Sacrificial: They were not wealthy (2 Corinthians 8:1-2) yet gave beyond their means. • Personal: Gifts came through Epaphroditus—face-to-face care, not impersonal charity. • Worshipful: Their giving was aimed at pleasing God, not gaining reputation. Practical Steps for Today 1. Assess Needs • Local: families in crisis, new believers, missionaries sent from the congregation. • Global: partner churches, persecuted believers (Hebrews 13:3). 2. Plan Systematically • Set aside funds weekly (1 Corinthians 16:2). • Build a benevolence line item in the church budget. 3. Give Sacrificially • Aim for generosity that actually rearranges personal priorities (Luke 21:1-4). • Practice periodic “luxury fasts”—redirect entertainment or dining-out money to ministry. 4. Deliver Personally • Send members with gifts, notes, and encouragement. • Host visiting missionaries, covering lodging and meals (3 John 5-8). 5. Celebrate Testimonies • Share stories of impact (Acts 14:27). • Thank God publicly for provision, keeping glory on Him. Heart Attitudes that Fuel Generosity • Contentment: Trust God’s provision (Philippians 4:11-13). • Cheerfulness: “God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7). • Faith: Believe that sowing generously reaps blessing (Proverbs 11:24-25). • Eternal Perspective: Lay up treasure in heaven (Matthew 6:19-21). Promises Attached to Generosity • God supplies every need (Philippians 4:19). • Overflowing spiritual fruit (2 Corinthians 9:10-11). • Witness to unbelievers (Matthew 5:16). • Deeper fellowship within the body (Acts 2:44-47). Putting It into Practice This Week • Identify one person or ministry to bless. • Decide on a concrete, sacrificial amount or act of service. • Involve another believer for accountability. • Follow through promptly, then thank God for allowing you to share in a “fragrant offering” that delights Him. |
