How can we avoid envying "wicked men" in our daily lives? Setting the Scene “Do not envy the wicked or desire their company.” (Proverbs 24:1) The verse is straightforward: envy has no place in a believer’s heart. But how do we keep that command when the “wicked” around us often appear to flourish? Recognize the Root of Envy • Envy starts with comparison. • Comparison comes from forgetting who we are in Christ (1 Peter 2:9). • It feeds on the lie that God is holding out on us (Genesis 3:5-6). Remember the End of the Wicked • Psalm 73:18-19 – their footing is “slippery”; sudden ruin awaits. • Proverbs 24:20 – “For the evil man has no future; the lamp of the wicked will be extinguished.” • Their apparent success is temporary; ours is eternal (2 Corinthians 4:18). Rehearse God’s Goodness • Psalm 34:8 – “Taste and see that the LORD is good.” • James 1:17 – every good gift comes from the Father. • Keeping a gratitude list of God’s daily mercies realigns our perspective. Refocus on Eternal Rewards • Colossians 3:2 – “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” • Matthew 6:19-21 – treasure in heaven is secure. • Romans 8:18 – current sufferings are not worth comparing with coming glory. Rejoice in Community and Accountability • Hebrews 10:24-25 – stirring one another to love and good works guards the heart. • Sharing struggles with trusted believers cuts envy off at the knees. • Celebrating others’ victories trains us to rejoice rather than resent. Replace Envy with Active Love • Romans 12:14-21 – bless those who persecute; overcome evil with good. • Pray for the success of coworkers, neighbors, even rivals. • Serve someone who prospers in ways you wish you did; love drives out envy. Practical Steps for Today 1. Start the morning with Psalm 73; note the psalmist’s turnaround in verses 16-17, 25-26. 2. Write three specific blessings Jesus secured for you (Ephesians 1:3-14). 3. Identify any person you secretly envy; pray sincerely for his or her welfare. 4. Limit inputs that stoke comparison (certain social media accounts, shows, ads). 5. Memorize Proverbs 24:1-2; quote it whenever envy whispers. Staying envy-free is less about ignoring the wicked and more about delighting in the Lord, whose steadfast love is better than life (Psalm 63:3). |
