What steps can we take to fully obey God in challenging situations? Setting the Scene “Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or of Sidon, or of Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, or Rehob.” (Judges 1:31) The tribe of Asher stopped short of what God commanded—leaving strongholds of Canaanite influence in place. Their partial obedience became ongoing compromise. In our own challenges, God still calls for full obedience, not selective compliance. The Warning of Partial Obedience • Judges 2:2–3 shows the fallout: unremoved influences became “thorns in your sides.” • 1 Samuel 15:22–23 reminds that “obedience is better than sacrifice.” • James 1:22 cautions, “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.” Leaving any “Acco” untouched keeps footholds for future defeat. Practical Steps Toward Full Obedience 1. Listen Carefully to God’s Specific Word • Joshua 1:7—“Be careful to observe all the law… Do not turn from it to the right or to the left.” • Regular, unhurried Scripture intake tunes us to God’s exact instructions. 2. Identify and Remove Every Point of Compromise • Deuteronomy 7:2 commanded total removal of enemy strongholds; the principle still applies to sin and unhealthy influences. • Make a written list of habits, relationships, or media that dull spiritual alertness, then act decisively. 3. Rely on God’s Power, Not Personal Willpower • Ephesians 6:10–11—“Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God.” • Prayerfully declare dependence on His Spirit before engaging each hard task. 4. Act Quickly and Courageously • Delayed obedience is disobedience in slow motion. • Joshua 10:6–9 shows Joshua marching all night to obey immediately. Adopt that same urgency. 5. Maintain Holy Separation • 2 Corinthians 6:17—“Come out from among them and be separate.” • Establish clear boundaries: what music, entertainment, business practices, or friendships need new limits? 6. Persevere When Resistance Intensifies • Galatians 6:9—“Let us not grow weary in doing good.” • When setbacks happen, recommit rather than retreat. 7. Invite Accountability • Hebrews 3:13—“Encourage one another daily… so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.” • Share specific obedience goals with trusted believers; request honest checks. Strength for the Battle • Romans 12:2—renewing the mind through Scripture reshapes instincts. • Psalm 119:11—hiding God’s word in the heart fortifies against temptation. • Joshua 1:9—“Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” Confidence grows when His presence is our focus, not our weakness. Living the Lesson Today Full obedience in difficult circumstances begins with unwavering trust that God’s commands are accurate, literal, and for our good. By removing every pocket of compromise, depending on His strength, and persevering with accountable community, we finish what He asks—driving out modern “Canaanites” so that Christ’s lordship is undivided in every corner of life. |
