How to obey God's call?
What steps can we take to respond obediently when God calls us?

Hear the Verse Afresh

“Once again the LORD called, ‘Samuel!’ So Samuel got up, went to Eli, and said, ‘Here I am, for you have called me.’ ‘My son, I did not call,’ Eli replied. ‘Go back and lie down.’” (1 Samuel 3:6)

Recognize the Voice

• God calls by name; He is personal (John 10:27).

• Samuel initially mistakes the LORD’s voice for Eli’s—reminding us that divine leading can sound familiar yet comes with authority.

• Train the ear through regular Scripture intake; the more we know the Word, the clearer His voice becomes (Psalm 119:105).

Position Yourself to Listen

• Samuel is lying down in the tabernacle where the ark was—close to God’s presence (vv. 3–4).

• Choose environments that foster attentiveness:

– Daily quiet time

– Gathering with believers (Hebrews 10:25)

– Eliminating noise and distraction

• A listening posture precedes obedient action.

Respond with Immediate Obedience

• Samuel “got up” at once—no delay, no excuses.

• Obedience often begins with small steps—answering, moving, presenting ourselves ready.

James 1:22 commands us to be doers, not hearers only.

Seek Godly Counsel and Confirmation

• Samuel turns to Eli; mature believers can help us discern God’s call (Proverbs 11:14).

• Eli eventually instructs Samuel to say, “Speak, LORD, for Your servant is listening” (v. 9).

• Counsel should steer us back to God, not away from Him.

Prepare Your Heart for Instruction

• Adopt the servant attitude: “Here I am.”

• Humility invites greater revelation (Isaiah 66:2).

• Regular confession and repentance keep the spiritual line clear (1 John 1:9).

Walk in Continual Faithfulness

• Samuel’s readiness in the night is mirrored by his lifelong ministry (1 Samuel 3:19).

• Faithfulness in present responsibilities positions us for future assignments (Luke 16:10).

• Steady obedience builds credibility for greater revelation.

Trust God’s Timing

• The LORD calls “once again.” He is patient yet persistent.

• If a call seems delayed or repeated, do not grow weary; stay available (Galatians 6:9).

• God’s purposes unfold at the perfect moment (Ecclesiastes 3:1).

Embrace a Servant Identity

• Mary’s words echo Samuel’s spirit: “I am the Lord’s servant… May it be to me as you have said” (Luke 1:38).

• Servanthood shifts focus from self-interest to God’s glory.

Romans 12:1 urges us to present our bodies as living sacrifices—our lifelong “Here I am.”

Practical Takeaways for Today

1. Schedule a daily listening time; guard it fiercely.

2. Memorize key passages that tune the heart to God’s frequency.

3. Invite mature believers to speak into your discernment process.

4. Act promptly on the light you have; further light follows faithful steps.
