How to prevent spiritual complacency?
In what ways can we guard against spiritual complacency today?

Setting the Scene: Jeremiah 5:17

“They will devour your harvest and food; they will devour your sons and daughters; they will devour your flocks and herds; they will devour your vines and fig trees. With the sword they will destroy your fortified cities in which you trust.”

• Judah’s “fortified cities” picture whatever we rely on instead of the Lord—careers, routines, even church traditions.

• When God’s people drift, He allows what they trust to be shaken so they will return to Him.

Recognizing the Signs of Complacency

• Loss of hunger for Scripture (Amos 8:11).

• Prayer becoming occasional and mechanical (Luke 18:1).

• Sin tolerated, excused, or re-labeled (Isaiah 5:20).

• Worship reduced to form without heart (Matthew 15:8).

• Confidence placed in past victories or religious activity (Jeremiah 7:4).

Why We Must Stay Alert

• Hearts drift subtly—“We must pay closer attention… so that we do not drift away.” (Hebrews 2:1)

• The enemy exploits dullness—“Be sober-minded and alert.” (1 Peter 5:8)

• Love can cool—“You have abandoned the love you had at first.” (Revelation 2:4)

• Complacency robs future generations (Jeremiah 5:17 mentions sons and daughters).

Guarding Our Hearts Daily

1. Prioritize fresh intake of God’s Word

‑ Read, meditate, and obey (Joshua 1:8; James 1:22).

2. Cultivate persistent, honest prayer

‑ Keep short accounts with God; confess quickly (1 John 1:9).

3. Practice regular self-examination

‑ “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith.” (2 Corinthians 13:5)

4. Remain teachable under biblical preaching

‑ “The one who listens to instruction is on the path of life.” (Proverbs 10:17).

5. Engage in accountable fellowship

‑ “Exhort one another daily… so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.” (Hebrews 3:13).

6. Serve actively, not passively

‑ Use gifts for the body (1 Peter 4:10), remembering idle hands drift.

Building Fortifications That Stand

• Guard the mind—filter media and conversations through Philippians 4:8.

• Guard the schedule—block time for spiritual disciplines before lesser pursuits.

• Guard the affections—delight in the Lord (Psalm 37:4) rather than temporary thrills.

Living Watchful, Hope-Filled Lives

• Expect the Lord’s return—“Stay dressed for service and keep your lamps burning.” (Luke 12:35)

• Trust His promises—He disciplines not to destroy but to restore (Hebrews 12:10-11).

• Walk in daily dependence—“Apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5).
