How to prioritize God's praise over human?
How can we guard against valuing human praise more than God's?

Setting the Scene: John 12:43

“For they loved praise from men more than praise from God.” (John 12:43)

Religious leaders saw Jesus’ miracles and quietly believed, yet the pull of human approval silenced them. The verse exposes a tug-of-war that every follower of Christ still feels.

Recognize the Root Problem

• The fear of man subtly competes with the fear of the LORD (Proverbs 29:25).

• Craving applause turns people into idols, placing them where only God belongs (Exodus 20:3).

• Public spirituality can become a mask for private unbelief, as with those leaders and later Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11).

Remember Whose Opinion Matters

• “Am I now seeking the approval of men, or of God?” (Galatians 1:10).

• “The LORD does not see as man does… the LORD looks on the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7).

• Jesus warns, “Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be seen by them.” (Matthew 6:1).

• God alone sits on the final judgment seat (2 Corinthians 5:10).

Cultivate God-Centered Habits

• Daily Scripture intake renews the mind so God’s voice grows louder than any crowd (Psalm 1:2; Romans 12:2).

• Private prayer and secret giving train the soul to seek unseen reward (Matthew 6:3-6).

• Memorize verses that spotlight God’s delight in obedience over popularity (Colossians 3:23-24).

• Journal moments when affirmation felt intoxicating, then write a thanks to God for His greater, lasting approval in Christ.

Guard Your Heart through Community

• Surround yourself with believers who speak truth in love, not flattery (Proverbs 27:6; Ephesians 4:15).

• Encourage one another toward faithfulness rather than applause (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Follow shepherds who, like Paul, “speak not to please men, but God who tests our hearts” (1 Thessalonians 2:4-6).

Live for Eternity, Not Applause

• Earthly praise fades; the imperishable crown awaits those who finish the race looking to Christ (1 Peter 5:4; 2 Timothy 4:8).

• “We make it our aim to please Him” today, anticipating “well done” on that Day (2 Corinthians 5:9; Matthew 25:21).

Practical Self-Check

• Notice when mood swings with compliments or criticism.

• Keep motives pure by asking God to search and test the heart (Psalm 139:23-24).

• Celebrate unseen acts of service more than public ones.

• Speak of Christ even when it risks reputation, trusting the Spirit for courage (Acts 4:19-20).

Valuing God’s praise above all others frees the soul, anchors identity in Christ, and stores treasure where no applause can reach but where glory never ends.
