How can we discern God's calling in our own lives today? Called and Anointed: 1 Samuel 16:13 “So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David from that day forward. Then Samuel set out and went to Ramah.” David’s story shows three timeless truths: • God chooses whom He wills, even when others overlook them. • The anointing is tangible and decisive—“the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David.” • From that moment, David’s life direction was set, even though years of preparation still lay ahead. The Spirit’s Role in Calling • The same Spirit who rushed upon David indwells every believer today (Romans 8:11). • God’s calling begins with His prior knowledge and purpose (Jeremiah 1:5; Ephesians 2:10). • The Spirit still speaks (Acts 13:2); Jesus promised, “My sheep listen to My voice” (John 10:27). Practices for Discerning God’s Call Today 1. Soak in Scripture – God’s will never contradicts His Word (Psalm 119:105). – Regular reading tunes the heart to recognize His voice. 2. Present yourself fully to Him – Romans 12:1-2: offering your body, renewing your mind, testing and approving His will. 3. Listen in prayer and fasting – As in Acts 13:2, times of focused worship create space for the Spirit to speak. 4. Notice persistent burdens and holy desires – Philippians 2:13: “It is God who works in you to will and to act.” – A calling often shows up as a recurring concern you cannot shake. 5. Identify spiritual gifts and life experiences – 1 Corinthians 12:4-7: gifts are “given for the common good.” – God rarely assigns tasks without equipping the servant. 6. Seek godly counsel – Proverbs 15:22: “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” – Mature believers can confirm or challenge what you sense. 7. Watch providential circumstances – Revelation 3:8: He opens doors no one can shut. – Open doors plus inner peace often point the same direction. Guardrails for Confirmation • Consistency with Scripture—never compromise clear commands. • Peace of Christ—Colossians 3:15 says His peace should “rule” (umpire) in our hearts. • Fruit of the Spirit—Galatians 5:22-25: calling will mature love, joy, and self-control, not chaos. • Faithful next steps—Luke 16:10: being trustworthy in “very little” precedes larger assignments. Living Out the Call with Faithfulness • Start where you are; David went back to shepherding until the throne opened. • Obey progressively; light for the next step often comes after we take the first one (Psalm 37:23). • Rely on God’s faithfulness—“The One who calls you is faithful, and He will do it.” (1 Thessalonians 5:24) Discerning God’s calling is neither mystical guesswork nor a one-time event. It is a Spirit-directed journey rooted in the unfailing truth of Scripture, affirmed by godly counsel, and walked out in daily obedience until, like David, we see every promise fulfilled in God’s perfect timing. |
