How can we daily rely on Jesus as our spiritual sustenance? Setting the Table: John 6:48 “I am the bread of life.” (John 6:48) Jesus presents Himself as the staple food of every believer’s soul. Just as bread nourishes the body, He alone nourishes the spirit. Recognizing Our Daily Need • Physical hunger returns each day; spiritual hunger does the same. • Apart from Christ, the heart grows weak and empty. “For apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5) • Scripture invites continual feeding: “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4) How to Receive His Sustenance Each Day • Ingest His Word – Read, listen to, or memorize a portion of Scripture each morning. – “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly…” (Colossians 3:16) • Depend in Prayer – Speak honestly to the Lord throughout the day, not only in set times. – Prayer draws on His strength, releasing worry and receiving rest. • Participate in Communion – The Lord’s Supper repeatedly points back to the sacrifice that secures life. – It reminds believers that His body and blood are the source of ongoing grace. • Walk in Obedience – Acting on His commands keeps the pipeline of fellowship clear. – “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and obey it.” (Luke 11:28) • Remain in Fellowship – Spiritual meals are often shared; community sharpens appetite for Christ. – “And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds.” (Hebrews 10:24) • Rely on His Spirit – The Spirit internalizes truth and empowers holy living. – “If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:25) Walking in Continual Nourishment • Begin each day by “tasting” His goodness in Scripture (Psalm 34:8). • Pause at midday to recall a verse or promise. • End the evening thanking Him for specific moments of provision. • Keep a journal of sightings of His faithfulness; this builds expectation for tomorrow. Promises for the Well-Fed Soul • Satisfaction: “Whoever comes to Me will never hunger.” (John 6:35) • Refreshment: “Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst.” (John 4:14) • Strength: “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13) • Provision: “My God will supply all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19) • Delight: “How sweet are Your words to my taste—sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (Psalm 119:103) Consistent reliance on Jesus—the true Bread—turns ordinary days into nourished, fruitful journeys with Him. |
