How to resist negative influences?
How can we guard against negative influences like those in 2 Chronicles 24:17?

Setting the scene—2 Chronicles 24:17

“After the death of Jehoiada, the officials of Judah came and paid homage to the king, and he listened to them.”

Joash’s downfall began the moment he opened his ears to voices that flattered rather than honored God. Their influence pulled him from wholehearted obedience into idolatry and judgment.

Why negative influences are so dangerous

• They appeal to pride and ego (cf. 2 Chronicles 24:17).

• They distort truth and erode conviction (1 Corinthians 15:33: “Bad company corrupts good character.”).

• They lead step-by-step away from God’s blessing (Psalm 1:1).

Recognize unhelpful voices

• Counsel that contradicts Scripture, no matter how persuasive.

• Flattery that pressures you to compromise.

• Advice that downplays sin or minimizes obedience.

• Relationships that consistently sap your zeal for the Lord.

Practical safeguards for the heart

• Stay alert: “Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow springs of life.” (Proverbs 4:23)

• Filter every influence through Scripture’s lens (Acts 17:11).

• Cultivate humility—Joash’s pride made him easy prey (Proverbs 16:18).

• Limit time in environments that celebrate sin (Ephesians 5:11).

Choose and maintain godly counsel

• Walk with the wise: “He who walks with the wise will become wise.” (Proverbs 13:20)

• Seek mentors who revere God more than your approval (Galatians 1:10).

• Embrace mutual sharpening: “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” (Proverbs 27:17).

• Weigh every suggestion against “All Scripture” that is “God-breathed and profitable.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Stay anchored in Scripture

• Daily intake—read, meditate, memorize (Joshua 1:8).

• Use the Word defensively and offensively: “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” (Ephesians 6:17).

• Let Philippians 4:8 set the standard for thoughts you entertain.

Rely on God’s ongoing help

• Ask for discernment: “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God… and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5).

• Stand in the full armor of God so “when the day of evil comes” you can remain unshaken (Ephesians 6:13).

• Trust that obedience brings protection and blessing (Psalm 84:11).

Living it out today

1. Evaluate current influences—media, friendships, mentors. Remove or redefine those that drag you from Christ.

2. Intentionally pursue fellowship where Scripture and holiness are honored.

3. Keep short accounts with God: repent quickly when you drift.

4. Celebrate and reinforce growth by sharing Scripture and testimonies with others.

By guarding our hearts, filtering counsel through the Word, and surrounding ourselves with godly voices, we avoid Joash’s mistake and remain steadfast in wholehearted devotion to the Lord.
