How to respect God's messengers?
In what ways can we show respect to God's messengers in our lives?

Honoring God by Honoring His Messengers

Judges 13:15 – “Manoah said to the Angel of the LORD, ‘Please let us detain You, and let us prepare a young goat for You.’ ”

Seeing Their God-Given Role

• Manoah recognized the Angel as a representative of the LORD, not merely a visitor.

Hebrews 13:2 reminds us that in showing hospitality, we may be entertaining angels unawares.

1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 calls us to “acknowledge those who labor among you… and esteem them very highly in love.”

Offering Practical Care

• Manoah prepares a meal—tangible service.

• Provide time, meals, resources, or help with everyday needs for pastors, missionaries, teachers.

Romans 12:13 – “Share with the saints who are in need. Practice hospitality.”

Listening Attentively

• Manoah’s request to stay implied he wanted to hear more.

James 1:19 – be “quick to listen,” especially when God’s Word is being taught.

• Avoid distractions, take notes, weigh every word with Scripture (Acts 17:11).

Submitting to God’s Word through Them

Hebrews 13:17 – “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls.”

• When messengers proclaim Scripture faithfully, respond with obedience, not mere acknowledgment.

1 Samuel 3:10 – “Speak, LORD, for Your servant is listening” sets the heart posture we adopt.

Expressing Gratitude and Honor

• Manoah offered a sacrificial gift; gratitude must cost something.

1 Timothy 5:17 – “The elders who lead well are worthy of double honor.”

• Send encouraging notes, verbal thanks, and, when fitting, financial support (Philippians 4:14-18).

Praying for Their Strength

• Though not in Judges 13:15, Manoah later asks the Angel for guidance (v. 17). Prayer is another form of respect.

Ephesians 6:19 – “Pray … that words may be given to me.”

• Intercede for protection, boldness, and wisdom for those who deliver God’s Word.

Guarding Their Reputation

• Refuse gossip (Ephesians 4:29).

• Defend them lovingly when slander arises (Proverbs 31:8-9).

• Recognize that attacks on God’s servants often aim to hinder the message.

Sharing in the Mission

• Hospitality was a partnership in the Angel’s work.

Philippians 1:5 highlights “partnership in the gospel.”

• Volunteer, evangelize, disciple others—showing you value the message by advancing it.

Living Out What Is Taught

• The greatest respect is obedience (John 14:15).

• “Do not merely listen to the word… Do what it says” (James 1:22).

• When we apply the teaching, we affirm the messenger and glorify the Sender.
