How to restore with God after sinning?
How can we seek restoration with God after breaking His commandments today?

Broken tablets, broken fellowship

“Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘Cut two stone tablets like the first ones, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke.’” (Exodus 34:1)

God launches the rescue

• Israel’s sin shattered more than stone; it fractured communion with God (Exodus 32:19).

• Yet the Lord Himself opens the way back—He speaks first, He plans restoration, He still intends to write His word on new tablets.

Steps toward restored closeness today

1. Face the break

• Admit the specific sin; no excuses (Psalm 51:3–4).

• “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

2. Return to His presence

• Moses went back up the mountain; we draw near through Christ.

• “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” (James 4:8)

• “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence.” (Hebrews 4:16)

3. Bring the stone—cooperate with His work

• God told Moses to supply fresh tablets; repentance offers God a willing heart.

• “Present your bodies as a living sacrifice.” (Romans 12:1)

• A humble, yielded spirit is the raw material He rewrites (Psalm 51:17).

4. Trust His rewriting grace

• The same finger that inscribed the first Law writes again.

• New-covenant promise: “I will put My law in their minds and write it on their hearts.” (Jeremiah 31:33)

• By the Spirit, “written not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.” (2 Corinthians 3:3)

5. Walk in renewed obedience

• Forgiveness is not a reset to repeat failure but a fresh call to faithfulness.

• “Repent, then, and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped away, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.” (Acts 3:19)

• “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” (John 14:15)

Why restoration is possible

• God’s character: “But with You there is forgiveness, that You may be feared.” (Psalm 130:4)

• Christ’s sacrifice: “He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree.” (1 Peter 2:24)

• Ongoing advocate: “We have an Advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.” (1 John 2:1)

Living the restored life

• Guard the heart daily (Proverbs 4:23).

• Stay in fellowship and accountability (Hebrews 10:24–25).

• Keep short accounts with God—quick confession, constant dependence, joyful obedience.
