In what ways can we seek God's guidance in uncertain times today? Living in the days “without a king” Judges 18:1 opens with a sobering description: “In those days there was no king of Israel, and in those days the tribe of the Danites was seeking an inheritance in which to settle, because they had not yet come into an inheritance among the tribes of Israel”. Israel lacked steady leadership, and every tribe was “seeking” direction. That atmosphere feels strikingly similar to seasons today when leaders wobble, culture shifts, and we wonder where to turn. Scripture holds up this moment as a warning—yet also as an invitation to seek the true King for trustworthy guidance. Where to turn when the compass spins The tribe of Dan went scouting by human reasoning and ended up drifting into idolatry (later in the same chapter). Their missteps highlight what we must pursue instead: • Scripture first and last – Psalm 119:105: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” – 2 Timothy 3:16-17: God-breathed truth equips “for every good work,” including the next decision. – Daily reading plans, memorization, and journaling keep the “lamp” burning bright. • Prayerful dependence – Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart… He will make your paths straight.” – James 1:5 promises wisdom “generously” to any who ask in faith. – Turn worries into petitions; ask, listen, wait. • The indwelling Spirit’s promptings – Galatians 5:16: “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” – Romans 8:14: “All who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.” – Sensitivity grows through confession of sin, quiet listening, and quick obedience. • Godly counsel – Proverbs 11:14: “Victory is won through many counselors.” – Seek voices anchored in Scripture—pastors, mentors, mature friends. – Compare every piece of advice with the Bible; discard whatever contradicts it. • Providential circumstances – Acts 16:6-10 shows doors closing and opening to steer Paul’s team. – Watch for repeated themes, unusual provision, or shut doors that redirect. – Circumstances never outrank Scripture, yet they often confirm it. Anchoring our hearts when the future feels foggy When every tribe did what was right in its own eyes, chaos followed. Steadfast hearts are forged by: 1. Consistency—set times each day for Bible immersion and prayer. 2. Community—worship, fellowship, and accountability inside a local church. 3. Courage—step forward on what God has already shown; guidance often unfolds mid-stride. Isaiah 30:21 sums it up: “Your ears will hear this command behind you: ‘This is the way. Walk in it.’” Trusting the Shepherd-King Unlike the unsettled Danites, believers today do have a King—Jesus Christ. He declares, “My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27). The voice that spoke creation still speaks through Scripture, by His Spirit, and through His people. In every uncertain season, that voice remains clear, faithful, and sufficient. |
