How to serve others like Jesus taught?
What steps can we take to serve others as Jesus instructed His disciples?

Setting the Scene

Jesus and the disciples reach Capernaum. Inside the house He asks about their debate on the road (Mark 9:33-34). Then He teaches, “‘If anyone wants to be first, he must be the last of all and the servant of all.’” (Mark 9:35).

Key Principle

• True greatness equals humble, voluntary service.

• Welcoming “little children” (Mark 9:37) means embracing the overlooked and powerless.

Practical Steps to Serve Others

1. Take hidden tasks—clean-up, set-up, quiet errands—without seeking credit.

2. Elevate the unnoticed: children, elderly, newcomers. Offer time, listening, practical help.

3. Put others first in conversation; act on their needs (Philippians 2:3-4).

4. Share resources: budget generosity, mirror Acts 2:44-45.

5. Lead by serving: follow Jesus’ foot-washing example (John 13:14-15).

Reinforcing Scriptures

Matthew 20:28—Jesus “did not come to be served, but to serve.”

Galatians 5:13—“Serve one another in love.”

1 Peter 4:10—Use gifts “to serve others.”

Philippians 2:5-7—Christ “emptied Himself… taking the form of a servant.”

Heart Check

• Depend on Christ’s strength (John 15:5).

• Seek the Father’s reward, not applause (Matthew 6:1-4).

• Serve with joy (2 Corinthians 9:7).

• Persevere, knowing God sees (Hebrews 6:10).

Action Plan for This Week

• Meet one unnoticed need or person.

• Replace self-promotion with silent faithfulness.

• Schedule an intentional act—deliver groceries, write encouragement, babysit freely.

• Each night, review how Christ served you and how you reflected Him.

How can we ensure our ambitions align with Jesus' teachings in Mark 9:33?
