How to sharpen spiritual tools today?
How can we ensure our spiritual tools are sharpened for God's work today?

Reading the Verse

1 Samuel 13:21: “The charge was a pim for sharpening plowshares and mattocks, and a third of a shekel for sharpening pitchforks and axes, and for repointing oxgoads.”

Historical Picture

• Israel lacked blacksmiths, so the people carried their iron tools to Philistine smiths

• Enemy control meant inflated costs and strategic vulnerability

• Only Saul and Jonathan possessed swords, leaving the nation largely unarmed (1 Samuel 13:19–22)

• Dull tools slowed harvest and hampered defense, mirroring spiritual lethargy today

Spiritual Parallel Today

• The believer’s “tools” are spiritual—Word, prayer, faith, gifts, character, testimony

• When these grow dull, ministry stalls and personal holiness suffers

• Remaining dependent on worldly systems for strength or wisdom invites compromise, just as Israel’s dependence on Philistine smiths did

God-Given Tools to Guard and Hone

• Scripture—our sword (Ephesians 6:17; Hebrews 4:12)

• Prayer—unceasing communion (1 Thessalonians 5:17; Jude 20)

• Faith—shield and motivation (Hebrews 11:6)

• Spiritual gifts—each believer equipped for service (1 Peter 4:10–11)

• Fellowship—iron sharpening iron (Proverbs 27:17; Hebrews 10:24–25)

• Obedience—doing the will of God sharpens discernment (John 7:17)

Sharpening Practices

• Daily Word intake

‑ Read, meditate, memorize (Psalm 119:11; Colossians 3:16)

‑ Study for doctrine, reproof, correction, training (2 Timothy 3:16–17)

• Consistent prayer

‑ Adoration, confession, thanksgiving, intercession (Philippians 4:6–7)

‑ Spirit-led prayer builds up faith (Ephesians 6:18)

• Active fellowship

‑ Mutual encouragement and accountability (Proverbs 27:17)

‑ Corporate worship fuels zeal (Acts 2:42–47)

• Exercising gifts

‑ Use them, do not neglect them (1 Timothy 4:14–16)

‑ Stir them into flame (2 Timothy 1:6)

• Practicing obedience immediately

‑ Obedience sharpens hearing (John 14:21)

‑ Faith grows through acting on the Word (James 1:22–25)

• Guarding purity

‑ Flee sinful influences that dull sensitivity (2 Timothy 2:22)

‑ Fix eyes on Christ (Hebrews 12:1–2)

Cost Paid by the Philistines vs. Christ

• Israel paid Philistines silver just to restore an edge

• Christ paid in His blood, equipping believers freely with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3; 1 Peter 1:18–19)

• Relying on worldly “smiths” now insults the sufficiency of that finished work

Staying Sharp Daily

• Schedule unhurried Scripture time each morning and night

• Pray through the day, turning anxieties into petitions

• Meet regularly with faithful believers for study and mutual exhortation

• Serve in the gifting God assigned; repetition refines skill

• Review life choices, repenting quickly when sin appears

• Celebrate small victories, thanking God for growth

Fruits of a Sharpened Edge

• Clear discernment between truth and error (Hebrews 5:14)

• Courageous witness empowered by the Spirit (Acts 4:31)

• Efficient labor producing lasting fruit (John 15:5)

• Unity within the body strengthened by love (Ephesians 4:16)

• Joyful anticipation of the Lord’s return, fully engaged in His work (1 Corinthians 15:58)
